Why sea water is salty? (video for children).

Water is one of the most powerful solvents. It is capable of dissolving and destroying any rock on the surface of the earth.

Streams of water, currents and droplets gradually destroy granite and stones, while leaching easily soluble components from them.

No solid race can withstand the ravages of water. This process is long, but inevitable. The salts that are removed from the rocks give the sea water a bitter and salty taste.

Currently there is no correct answer to this question, and in the scientific world there are active debates and discussions on this subject.

Scientists only highlight two basic theories, each of which seems to be true as well, but at the same time they contradict each other, and there are several important arguments against each one.

The first theory:

The seas and oceans acquired salinity as a result of slow and gradual processes.

According to this theory, seawater has become salty as a result of the water cycle in nature. This process can be described in more detail in the following way: rain ravaged and gradually dissolved mineral salts contained in rocks and soils, rainwater fell into rivers.

Source
The rivers also remove the particles of several salts from the bottom, then it entered the seas and oceans under the influence of the current.

Under the influence of solar heat, water on the seas evaporated and fell back to the ground in the form of rain and other precipitation; the process was repeated. And salt, of course, millions of years accumulated in the oceans, gradually increasing the level of salinity.

But then a big question arises: Why for more than 500 million years the salinity level of ocean water does not increase and remains at the same level of 35 ppm (35 grams of salt per 1 liter of water)?

The second theory.

The ocean water was salty from the beginning.

In the initial stages of the formation of our planet, volcanic fumes were emitted from the depths of the mantle along with the first water vapor.

Source
These fumes were enriched with the products of volcanic activity: chlorine, phosphorus and bromine. The water mixed with these vapors seemed more acidic than water.

The primary acidic water filled the oceans and seas of the future and destroyed crystalline rocks of the earth's crust in the background, which caused the release of elements such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium ... A simple chemical reaction followed, in which Chlorine interacted with sodium. It turned out the salt. Over time, the volcanic activity decreased and the level of salinity stabilized.

Currently, scientists agreed that these two hypotheses have the right to exist, and do not refute, but complement each other.
