The Power Of Negative Thinking

Wanna know a secret?

It’s the secret to “The Secret”...

Your negative thoughts are just as important and valuable as your positive thoughts!

And this isn’t just my opinion. It is backed by research.

Gabriele Oettingen, a professor of psychology at New York University investigated the effects of people’s thinking about their future.

Over twenty years of study, she found that those who paid attention to both their positive AND negative thoughts were more likely to succeed in creating the outcomes that they wanted. She published this research in the book “Rethinking Positive Thinking”.

Now, if you’ve been trying to avoid negative thinking and “focus on the positive”, this might come as a shock.

I know it did for me. However, consider this.

You are the current pinnacle of human evolution.

Do you think that the thoughts that you spend more than three quarters of your time thinking (come on, admit it!) are USELESS?

NO!

They aren’t!

Now, I get that you might have come to this conclusion, as did I.

The personal growth and new age/spiritual/law of attraction movements are full of the message to be positive.

Avoid negativity at all costs.

And, this can seem to be good advice. There is a widespread belief that our thoughts create our reality.

It is true that positive thinking can expand our horizons and bring new opportunities in life.

However, it is not as simple as focusing on positive thoughts and crafting beautiful affirmations about how “life is getting brighter and lighter in every way.”

Because, guess what….

Your negative thoughts and feelings are there anyway, subconsciously pulling the strings and sabotaging your every move towards creating what you consciously desire.

This is what happens when they are suppressed.

However, when you acknowledge and open yourself up to your negative thoughts AS WELL AS the positive ones, strange things can happen.

Your obstacles can transform into objectives – steps on your journey to creating the outcomes you desire.

So, why does this happen?

You may have heard that the subconscious mind makes no distinction between thought and physical reality.

This means that visualising or imagining the future that you desire (a classic positive thinking technique) can have unintended consequences.

It can cause you to subconsciously think and feel that you have already achieved what you desire.

This can actually cause you to lose motivation and remain stuck, without taking action – a dreamer!

Here’s where negative thinking comes into play….

After carrying out your positive visualisation, bring your attention to all of the reasons that you won’t achieve the outcome that you desire.

Pay attention to and make a list of all of the practical reasons and negative self-talk that comes up when you think about achieving the outcome.

Hey presto!

Your so called negative thoughts and feelings have now become a roadmap to achieving the outcomes that you want to create.

However, it can be challenging focusing on the negative thoughts and feelings. Naturally, we are resistant to this.

Shove them all down and pretend they aren’t there. It’s too scary to think about what might go wrong.

Luckily, there is a not-so-secret technique that can make this part much easier.

EFT (aka Tapping) enables you to explore and release the difficult emotions that are attached to negative thoughts and beliefs.

This makes it so much easier to take action, as it is actually the feelings that are preventing you from moving forwards.
