Profesör Kessler'in 1980 senesinden yaptığı araştırmalarla, Nusaybin ve çevresinin tarihçesi daha rahat anlaşılmıştır. Profesör Kessler yaptığı çalışmalarını, Kuzey Mezopotamya'nın Tarihi Topoğrafya'sı Üzerine Araştırmalar ismiyle yayınlamıştır. Bu eserinde özellikle antik çağların bölgedeki ana ulaşım hattını araştırmıştır. Yaptığı çalışmalardan biri Kaşyari Yolu olarak da anılan dağlık bölgedir. Bugün Mardin Eşiği olarak da bilinen bu bölge Tur Abidin'dir.
