What If The Earth Suddenly Stopped Spinning?

in #steempress6 years ago

As far-fetched as it seems to be, we all love to wonder what would happen to us if we were to face the brunt of natural disasters. In the age of technology today, we forget the sometimes the most dangerous threats to us are the elements of Mother Nature. The popularity of films such as The Day After Tomorrow, San Andreas, and GeoStorm all feed our imagination on the impact such disasters will have on us. Today we ask ourselves, what happens when the Earth suddenly stopped spinning?

First of all, we will experience Supersonic Winds

The Earth is rotating at 1100 miles per hour, the abrupt halt would definitely cause severe repercussions. Because the atmosphere continues to move at its initial velocity, the Earth will experience supersonic winds which will without a doubt, tear literally everything from buildings to skyscrapers down. Think hurricanes on a catastrophic level. Almost anything man made not firmly rooted into the Earth’s crust would be stripped off and uprooted. Needless to say, the thousands of airplanes in the sky would also be wrecked by the winds.

Right after that, we can expect tsunamis on the strongest level pouring down onto the Earth and combing through whatever the windstorms didn’t get. Once again, this is because of the momentum when the Earth suddenly stopped spinning.

The only thing that might brave the winds and seas would be the deepest and most secure underground bunkers. And let’s not even think about how to get out of the bunker with all the fallen debris on top!

But what happens in the aftermath?

Assuming that there will be a small pocket of us left standing, this is what will probably happen.

As a worldwide government struggles to make sense of what is happening, the more subtle threats and implications will start to take to place. For one, as we all probably guessed, one half of the Earth would be in utter darkness, while the other in light. What we must remember is that although the Earth has stopped rotation with regards to its axis, it is still revolving around the sun. This means that both day and night will last for almost 6 months long!! Since the supersonics winds have already torn down almost all forms of electrical lighting, we may even have to rely on primitive sources of light and heat like fire.

As time goes on, however, we will come to realize that not all parts of the Earth are habitable. The half of the Earth under constant sunlight would steadily but surely increase in temperature, and the other half of the Earth in utter darkness would plummet in temperature. This will make the two ends completely uninhabitable due to the temperature extremities.

What this means only the thin lining around the equatorial will have the most bearable climate and all remaining living creatures would flock towards it. The remains of humanity that have braved the elements would then pick themselves up again. Which brings us to our next question…

WILL THIS BE THE END OF EARTH?

Not exactly… because of the faithful companion, we know as the moon. Don’t forget, the moon will continue to orbit around Earth. As of now, the tidal energy fed by the Earth emits a ‘push’ force onto the Moon. But without the rotation of the Earth feeding the moon tidal energy, the Moon would stop drifting away from the Earth and would start to slowly drift back toward us. Slowly but surely, the Moon will come closer to Earth and its gravitational pull will tug onto the Earth. This will, in turn, allow the Earth to Start rotating once again.
