The violence has worsened and has assumed various forms of establishing in schools. In today's days, we find evident facets and other more subtle ones.

But how to treat and combat this problem?

We know that student learning is not the only concern of families and teachers. Unfortunately, another factor is the scene: violence in school.

source

And that violence does not consist only in the episodes with weapons, physical aggression, and cases of abuse that we see in the news. And it is not confused with the occasional fights between students. There are also cases of symbolic violence that occur all the time: we can cite bullying as an example.

This without counting episodes of racism, jokes about gender or religion, in addition to small physical attacks that, on the other, end up going unnoticed, as well as social isolation, intimidation, and even petty theft. Therefore, detecting and combating violence has become a great challenge for education professionals. In the end, what do you do when it happens?

Keep an open dialogue with the students

In general, the violence that occurs in schools is quite discreet but can be harmful enough to generate suffering and imprison the victims in silence.

The school needs to be recognized by students and their families as a safe social environment, so keep communication channels always open with students and their families. This habit helps in building a bond of trust between you. At the end, when the student and the family feel safe and welcome in the school environment, at the signal of any problem they will feel more comfortable to seek help.

If the child has low self-esteem or shows that he does not like to go to school, be careful: he may be a victim of some type of violence.
Not always a bulletin with very high grades is a guarantee that "the student is doing well in school". In addition to physical health, it is important to take care of the psychological health of our students.

Approach families

Have you heard that "prevention is better than cure"? Popular dictations often give clues to wisdom and, in that case, prevention is worth gold. Thus, if there are indications that a student has been suffering from any type of violence, inform the family immediately, since minor violence can give margins to more serious expressions.

source

Teachers and school staff must remain alert to cases of jokes or charged jokes among students. Generally, the aggressor invests against some colleague possibly against a more timid or reserved.

Observing whether children have any strange marks on the body is also essential to identify the occurrence of physical violence.

The permanent monitoring and cooperation between family and school represent essential aspects to prevent undesirable behaviors and extinguish situations of violence in the school.

Look for awareness

If you perceive that episodes of violence have occurred in your school, it may be the case to invite a specialized professional to assist in the task of identifying the motivations, discussing the actions and acting in search of solutions.

source

When the school fosters dialogue around this issue, it helps to develop a critical sense in its students and gains strength to value respect, solidarity, and coexistence among human beings who come to school with origins, stories, baggage, and very different limitations.

This mass awareness works as a double strategy, making those who practice violence understand why they should not do it, and those who suffer it, are encouraged to relate the situation to the family and teachers.

source

In addition, another factor that deserves emphasis and that needs to be discussed refers to those who testify or participate indirectly in acts of violence. Thus, in an act of violence, both symbolic and physical, the student who attends such an act can change the course of the situation, ceasing to value the aggressor, or refraining from abstaining to help the victim. Behaviors and assertive attitudes on the part of colleagues, make the action of the aggressor increasingly meaningless.
