Hello friends of @steemiteducation, nice to meet you, the home experiments open us a universe of knowledge and teaching possibilities for our children, sometimes we believe that to educate our children we need a highly prepared and somewhat complicated material, no! Today I want to show you a very simple Home Experiment that demonstrates that science does not have to be boring and that most of the experiments we can do with our children do not need complicated and elaborated materials, you will be fascinated by all the information and knowledge that you can transmit with this simple experiment.

 
 

What is osmosis?

  Osmosis is a physical phenomenon essential for life. The absorption of water in the intestine is done by osmosis, plants use it, at least in part, to obtain water from the soil and in general all cells regulate their levels of solute concentration by osmosis.  

So that the children understand why it happens, it is enough to make a simple experiment with a potato.

  So let's go with the experiment.  

Materials:

   

• Raw potato.

 

• Knife and spoon

 

• Salt.

 

• Water.

 

• Two glasses.

 
       

Process:

 

• Prepare two glasses of water.

 

• In one of the glasses add 2 teaspoons of salt and stir to dissolve better.

   
     

• Peel the potato and cut two strips of approximately the same size. Examine your flexibility.

   

• Place a strip of potato in each glass.

 

• Let them soak for a day. Meanwhile, take out the strips from time to time and observe the changes that are taking place in terms of size, color and flexibility.

What happen?

  The diffusion is the movement of molecules from a zone of greater concentration to an area of ​​lower concentration of these molecules. The net movement will last until the equilibrium is reached. Osmosis is a particular case of diffusion, it is the diffusion of water, and only water, through a semipermeable membrane from an area of ​​lower concentration of solute to an area of ​​higher concentration of that solute in order to equalize concentrations.   Each cell that makes up the potato is surrounded by a protective membrane that allows only certain substances to pass through, which is why it is said to be selectively permeable or semipermeable. Water can pass through osmosis through this membrane.   Potato strip in salty water. Out of your cells, the salt concentration is much higher than inside, so the water comes out of the potato. When you lose water, its size decreases and your cells begin to die and lose their stiffness. The potato strip becomes elastic and its color becomes black.   Potato strip in water. Within your cells, the salt concentration is higher than outside. The water enters to equal concentrations. With so much water its size and rigidity increase. When you try to bend it, it breaks.       Children love to do experiments. With them, while having fun, they learnand ask questions about the world around them. Among its many benefits, scientific exploration feeds the child's natural curiosity, fosters his interest in science, stimulates reasoning and logic, improves his ability to solve problems, increases his self-esteem and prepares them to understand more complicated scientific concepts in the future.To enjoy science is not necessary to have a laboratory, you will be surprised by the amount of experiments that can be done with some home materials.
