During the school stage, the fractions are a subject that children have difficulties to handle, so it is important to use simple and didactic methods to facilitate their understanding since it will be an issue that will accompany them throughout school life.

It is transcendental to point out that in everyday life it is very common to measure objects and express a quantity by means of a fraction, which means that a quantity of equal parts of a total has been taken. For example, a cake has been divided into four equal parts, each part of the cake is a quarter and is represented as a ¼ fraction.

Terms of a fraction

In a fraction, there are two numbers called terms, which are written one over another separated by a horizontal line.
• The one that is written below the line is the denominator and is the one that indicates the number of equal parts in which the unit has been divided.
• The one that is written above the line is the numerator and is the one that indicates the number of equal parts that were taken from the unit.

Equivalent fractions

They are fractions that represent the same amount despite expressing themselves differently. For example, if we look at the drawing, the pizza is divided into 8 pieces and 4 are taken, it is the same as if it is divided into 6 and 3 are taken and it is also the same as dividing the pizza into 2 pieces and taking 1, in all cases equals half of the pizza.

Fractions classes

Depending on the quantity expressed by the numerator and the denominator of a fraction, the following classes of fractions are distinguished:

• Own fraction is one whose numerator is smaller than the denominator. This type of fraction is less than unity.
• If the numerator and the denominator are equal, the fraction is equal to the unit.
• The improper fraction is one whose numerator is greater than the denominator. For example, we say that 7/5 is greater than the unit because we have divided the units into 5 equal parts, but to take 7 of those parts it is necessary to have more than one unit, that is, we will take 5/5 of the first unit and 2/5 of the second.

Now, if we use other tools for children to learn correctly, we have:
• A chocolate bar that has 12 pieces and can be easily used to share it with friends. This is a delicious way to express the fraction, where the child expresses how to distribute it if it is 1/12, 2/12 or 5/12.
• Preparing a cooking recipe, children have fun helping mom prepare her favorite recipe, as in the case of homemade cookies, it is a method to learn the importance and value of fractions in daily tasks, it is only necessary to take the measuring cups to facilitate the preparation. How to use the expressions of ¼ cup of milk or ½ of butter, this will help the child to assimilate what has been learned in a fun way.
• Pack of candies of different colors, in the classroom this activity is fun since the children will group the candies by colors and then identify according to the color with respect to the unit, for example, if the package has 24 candies and there are 10 red candies, then it would be 10/24. Help each child who expresses himself in a fraction of the total of the unit, according to the color he plays.

It is very important to understand the need for fractions in daily life, as well as to have the mathematical knowledge, to achieve the resolution of many unknowns, such as adding, gathering, eliminating, calculating or distributing, which will facilitate daily tasks throughout life.
