A few reflections on Facebook at Fifteen

I've moved to Hive, along with most other people, following Justin Sun's takeover of Steem in the Spring of 2020. I believe hive is a lot more decentralised than Steem!

Sort:

Interesting to think it has been 15 years, already.

Funny, because Facebook killed the old form "Social Blogging" of the likes of DiaryX, LiveJournal, Xanga and others that were my online mainstays back then... and I always felt a great void because Facebook (and to a smaller degree MySpace) took the "content" out of "the social web." What's my point? I ended up embracing Steemit precisely because in its earliest incarnation content mattered and part of Dan's vision was that this could become a great repository of human information.

How things change!

I remain hopeful that Steem/Steemit will solve some of its issues going forward... and that I will still be allowed to post Steemit articles to my Facebook wall...

Dyou know I've never even heard of any of those old social blogging platforms!

On reflection I was kind of late to social media... 2009 is when I joined Twitter.

I doubt if they'll ever be a correlation between quality content and rewards here.

But it's still by far the most social social media account I've got.

Facebook isn't any different to any other capitalist enterprise - the advent of the railways sprang to mind when I read this, and mass industrialisation generally. It's the next wave.
Governments are helpless because they know very little about what's involved and the implications, the parlous questioning of Mark Zuckerberg by US Senators illustrated that.
As well as the very aggressive monopolising, Facebook is adept at exploiting addictive tendencies (you've written elsewhere about this) and we are very poor at educating children and young people how to manage this still relatively new social environment.

Good comment!

It's easy to forget how new all of this is! 15 years is nothing... you're right that governments are still playing catch up! So are schools.

Nation states and their agents are very much on the back foot I feel... they've got nothing other than lame defensive 'mindfulness programmes' for kids.

I'm having a leave my phone in another room day, combined with write everything in word first, then just have one or two windows open.

Currently on lunch so having a social media break.

It's the way to go with these sites... schedule a period of time to be on them, and then GTG off them for 95% of the day!

I fear of using Facebook even though I needed it because of the fear of prejudice, racism, gossip, and ridicule from people that do not even know me and the people that knows me. @revisesociology

Surely people don't ridicule on Facebook. That's disgusting if that's the case!

But unfortunateltly it's also believable.

Some of those criticisms can happen on STEEM too... the difference is that on STEEM we can be humans, while on Facebook they allow some humans while blocking others...

I think that it will happen sooner then 2034, for one simple reason, parents are changing to instagram... the cycle of social networks normally goes like this: First the teens and kids join the social network, adults seeing this decide to join to, but teens don't like this, so they change to the next social network, last time this happened Facebook started to decline and Instagram started to get a lot more users, now we are seeing adults deleting their facebook accounts and changing to Instagram, what happens next? Teens and kids will want to change social network, and what is the next step in the social network space? Blockchain based social networks... I think that by 2025-2027 we will get a massive exodus from instagram to blockchain based social networks... Let's wait and see what happens... We just need to develop more dapps, more platforms, more ways that STEEM and the blockchain can be used! We also need a better interface! Because the current interface in all of the platforms lacks a lot when comparing with the Instagram simple interface!

Sooner would be nice!

I just don't see any real signs of it yet.

Then again change can happen fast!

I'm not a zuckered apologist, but a lot of the problems with the Facebook are just problems with [ insert name of the largest social media platforms here].
They could definitely do things more open and honest, but hey for the rest of us there is Steemit.

Speaking of that here is some math:
FB market cap: $473,160,000,000
STEEM market cap: $90,814,632
That's a market cap 5210 X larger

Or if you are Lambo Moon Child that's potential for just under $150 per STEEM token when STEEM has the same value, but obviously it's at least 10 X better so that's like 100000 per Steem or something!

Love yer optimism.

But wait, you're forgetting that steem could be the next FB + Amazon + YouTube + etc. etc..... so 10* again.

I'd probably go for an Aston Martin rather than a Lambo.

Right forgot SMTs, Dapps.
Also, way more potential for advertisements since clicks and stuff can be recorded on the immutable blockchain proving conversion rates and allowing for very focused targeting.
Then there is my personal favorite cryptographic surveillance and forensics.
Most people looking at blockchains are taking a freedom libertarian approach, but I think there are also many less explored but authoritarian friendly aspects.

Just wonder why can’t people see this
