The Unconditional Expansion of Universities

I've moved to Hive, along with most other people, following Justin Sun's takeover of Steem in the Spring of 2020. I believe hive is a lot more decentralised than Steem!

Sort:

I think it's to do with how Universities are financed, the downturn in the demographic (there's less and less young people) and the Government's decision to create a hostile environment for international students, removing a source of revenue that helped to subsidise other teaching areas. The removal of the cap on student numbers has meant that Universities are now in competition with each other for a diminishing number of students. I was told on Monday that at least ten Universities are facing bankrupcty and several of those provide a university-education to sets of the population that would be otherwise excluded. I was also surprised to learn that less young people are choosing to go to University.

It sounds like another aspect of the generational divide.

I think those bottom ten are probably those which add nothing to the salaries of the people who do them after 10 years.

From a purely financial perspective they deserve to fail. Then again such easy arguments just reinforce the idea that markets and money should drive education!

Hmmm, makes me wonder what the UK policy/strategy is for university education. I'll have to go and do a bit of reading. The main thing I've noticed about a more market driven approach in local government and health services is that individual contracts make perfect sense in themselves, but when considered together, they don't make sense. There are three big contracts for housing in a west london borough, but it's not the responsiblity of any of them to fix a banging door at the top of a block of flats. I'm guessing there are similar disconnects between universities and the rest of the education system.

undoubtedly, I think marketization in universities is even more advanced than markeization in schools. It's been going on for decades now!

It's a very insecure life for most people working in HE in the UK these days!
