Trip in historic city of Spain- Segovia /

in #steempress5 years ago (edited)

After Barcelona, we continue our journey in Spain. The next stop is Madrid. We are not hurried to discover the nobility of this royal city, but to look around to Segovia, which has witnessed the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, the moors, and Spanish empire, it is the birthplace of Spanish history.

Segovia, with a history of more than 2,000 years, is an ancient city 70 kilometers in the north of Madrid and is famous for its ancient Roman aqueducts. This is one of the most well-preserved ancient Roman project, the Romans built the 700-metre-long aqueduct to drain water from the surrounding mountains as the city's inhabitants needed it. The aqueduct is divided into the visible part with a height of more than 30 meters, and the underground part which is more than 20 meters below. Compared to cars in the picture below, you could see the greatness of this project. Just as the ancient Egyptians built the pyramids, it is also hard to imagine how the ancient Romans built the aqueduct without engineering machinery. Even more incredibly, the entire canal was not connected by clay and lime, but was held by the weight of the rocks against each other, which had stood there for over 20 centuries.

Not far from the aqueduct, we saw the plaza of Saint-Martin, where a statue of the hero Juan bravo was erected. This respected hero leaded local people against the Roman Empire and was finally killed, but his bravery remains forever in the city's memory.

Segovia cathedral is said to be the last gothic building built in Spain. The gothic spires of the whole building are various and quite dramatic. This side of the building that I photographed was the sun-rise side, under the sun, the outer walls and attic are stacked up like medieval fortresses, which are extremely magnificent.

Alcasa castle is a unique stone castle in segovia with three cliffs that can only be accessed through a drawbridge. Originally it was a fortress, and later it was used as a palace, a prison, a royal artillery academy and also a military academy. The blue roof and its total shape of this castle was very fantastic and was believed to be the prototype of Disney's "Snow White castle". The castle looked like a sailing ship from a distance. The towering tower was the sail, and from there you could see the whole city of Segovia and the surrounding fields.

Wandering the maze of alleys, you can always find some surprises. Just like these buildings, the mottled walls recorded the history of this city, but in the sunshine, it seems that the old man of a thousand years has restored his youthful vigor and came back to his childhood. The past is gone, it is time to move on.
