TacoCat's Travels (Finland) #3: Walking on "water"! 😉

in #steempress6 years ago (edited)

It's time to start clearing my backlog of photos from the past 4 months so here we go!

11 March 2018. Sunday.
It's the last day before classes start, so we decided to take a walk and revisit the huuuuge hypermarkets we went to on our first day here. We didn't have enough time to explore on our first day because it was late and they were closing soon. We actually really like supermarkets and grocery shopping is one of our favourite activities to do together! 😊#simplepleasures #cheapthrills

The hypermarkets were across the lake next to a highway so it's much easier to access them by driving but since we didn't have a car we just had to walk. Fortunately, it was still super cold so the lake was frozen enough that we could walk on it with no trouble!

The main "city" of Mikkeli is on the left and we had to cross that water body to get to the hypermarket on the right

It was really fun walking on the frozen lake! We had to be careful as it can be a bit slippery but luckily the snow was thick enough that day to provide friction on the ice.

@seanytan made a video while we walking, check it out here!

Fishing is one of Finland's main attractions because there's so many lakes in Finland. In fact, Finland is known as the Land of a Thousand Lakes, and Mikkeli is located fairy close to one of their largest lakes, Lake Saimaa.

We saw some fishing boats stuck in the ice at the dock!

From the map above you can see we actually had to cross quite a wide area so it was very open and somewhat windy. It was just a flat area of white because of the snow, and while we were walking we even saw a few people skiing on the ice!

Because the frozen lake was so flat the skier could zoom across it really quickly. We were quite envious, but the weather wasn't too cold so we didn't mind taking a nice leisurely walk.

The snow couldn't cover the part of the lake underneath the highway so it was pretty slippery under there.

I'm not sure how long it took, but from our apartment it might've been more than 30min. Anyway, we were really excited when we finally reached the hypermarkets!

Time to shop!

There were soooo many aisles! And they had all kinds of products, ranging from food to clothing and household items. It was basically a bigger Giant, but with soooo much more space! I loved how open it is compared to Singapore's supermarkets where everything is cramped and you constantly have to squeeze past people and their bulky trolleys. I'm quite a small girl but I hate having to sidestep people every time I go to the supermarket (or anywhere in Singapore, tbh 😞)

Look at how huge the aisle is!

Check out this wall of sweets!

We discovered that they don't give plastic bags for free here (something SG is looking into as well, I hope!). I hate having to use plastic bags unnecessarily, and fortunately, we brought our eco-friendly shopping bags! I like that Finland is so environmentally friendly, and I think it's partly due to them having so many lakes. Since fishing is pretty big here they have to make sure they preserve their fresh water.

Anyway, after our shopping we went to check out the only McDonalds here in Mikkeli, which is opposite the hypermarket. Unfortunately it's quite far from our school and apartment so we probably won't be eating it too much.

It was pretty pricey so we didn't buy anything and just headed back home to cook dinner and make snow angels!

Thanks for reading!
