Something Vornix user has to know after the downtime

in #steempress5 years ago

This post is to address the Vornix downtime issue 2 weeks ago:

Vornix domain suspension by the service provider has finally been resolved and users are now able to visit their own or other's domain as usual. We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience caused for this period and would like to take this opportunity to talk more about this incidence and making some disclaimers.

What was causing the downtime?

Vornix is the first Wordpress service provider who aims to add value to the mission of @steempress-io. We aim to provide a paid service(as good as free if you consider the current price of Steem) to help existing Steemians who would like to try out the full-featured Wordpress without the technical hassle and hefty charge.

We do not limit the theme or plugin users can download so that all Vornix users can fully experience how a completely-unlocked Wordpress feels like before making a serious decision to further their blogging investment.

However, great freedom comes at a great price. Since Vornix is basically a reseller plan that creates hundreds of subdomain under vornix.blog, users are allowed to whatever file to our domain hosting site without our approval.

In this incident, our service provider has triggered a false alarm on a particular file that was uploaded by one of our users and they decided to suspend our account and domain until we get rid of it. Until the provider scanned through our site and bring everything back up alive, we've been down for over a week.

How should we prevent this?

Unfortunately, there is no way to stop this from happening again since limiting what users can do is pretty much violating the principle of Vornix.

We urge all serious bloggers to...

We believe Vornix as an experimental Wordpress service provider has accomplished its mission along the way. We've supported our users to get the idea of owning full-controlled WP site, to start taking blogging from another perspective, exploring a new blogging world outside of Steemit, all for a mediocre fee if not for free at all.

With that said, to prevent future potential issues by shared hosting, serious bloggers might want to consider:

  • Start hosting your own website.
  • Get a custom domain name to shine your own brand
  • Migrate content from Vornix and move on to other web hosting service

For those who choose to stay, we appreciate the support and Vornix will keep running and supporting our users like what we promised since day 1.
