Lots of Elephants ~ a Comparison

in #steemsilvergold5 years ago (edited)

Hello there, today I'll look into the differences of fractional silver coins from the same series. They all do have the same design and only differ in size. But do they?

Elephant Comparisons

For this comparison, I'm going to use the 2019 Somali Elephant series. I'm going to use all the sizes except two, five and ten ounces. So in total, we're going to look at the 110, 14, 12, 1 ounce and 1 kg coins.

Conclusion

There we have it, five times the 2019 Somali elephant front and back. Aside from the residue and some scratches on the fractional coins they do look similar. But the devil is in the detail. The 1 kg version looks the prettiest, the large surface is very smooth, and every detail stands out. If we go down to the 1 oz version, the raised areas look grainy, almost like un-tempered chocolate. It gets worse the lower you go. But you can still make out the same details as in the 1 kg version. The biggest difference is in the 1/10 ounce coin. Details in the elephant trunk are almost completely gone, and trees look a bit blobby.

Compared to that the back of the coins is pretty consistent, even though there is a slight loss of quality.
So overall I can say for the 2019 Somali elephant, the bigger the coin, the higher quality the strike.
Have you observed this as well with your coins? Or do you think it's quite the opposite?

original size

Elly is amazed at the size difference. The 1/10
ounce is really tiny!

nice collection

Thanks:) It kind of bugs me, that I don't have the other large coins from the series^^ That would have rounded up this look at fractionals.

Ooo. I don’t have any really big coins so this comparison is cool to see.

Thank you, I think with 10-ounce coins you should get a good start. And they are not that expensive as a kilo coin. Big coins are cool :D (But expensive....)
