German silver - what is it or better what was it.

in #steemsilvergold5 years ago (edited)

I buy almost all my silver - i.e. 99% AG - in Germany and this should not be confused with the term "German Silver". Sometimes on Ebay or Alibaba or in antiqueshops you see items offered refered to as German silver. The name German Silver is old but now prohibited if not containing silver.

"So what was meant by that name:

a quote:
" German silver, name for various alloys of copper, zinc, and nickel, sometimes also containing lead and tin. They were originally named for their silver-white color, but use of the term silver is now prohibited for alloys not containing that metal."

Example: presented as German silver on an auction of Catawiki and sold for 206 EUR.

A few years ago a Tuber proudly showed he bought a belt-knuckle of German silver. Then a tuber of Middle East country told him he was fooled and bought rubbish/shit. The buyers reaction was not worth repeating here and all comotion with others involved led to him leaving YouTube in the end. (Popcorn!)

Fools gold

Apart of German Silver you also have Fools Gold which is pyrite and is sold by scammers as real gold. Ghana is known for this and you are never allowed to hold the "gold" because it weighs 5 times less than pure gold or gold/silver nuggets. The structure is also very different especially the lines included are something that does not occur in gold. Pyrite is nice to have but just do not pay a large amount as it is cheap!

Pyrite

Where you ever scammed?

I had a Iron pyrite paper weight that some of my acquaintances thought it was gold. It was a free souvenir from a University Geology department tour of a local mine.

I was scammed in a Parisian restaurant buying a coke. European cokes are very small. We thought by ordering a large we would get a regular sized US coke. Instead the waiter brought us two cokes larger than Munich beer hall steins. Each was filled with coke, half of a pineapple, many other fruits and a large lit firecracker that was whistling loudly. One of these hey look at the stupid American’s with their large drinks presentations. Each drink cost €16 which was about $20USD. This was just €1 short of the price for each ticket we had bought for the Eiffel Tower.

My husband was so mad, but I think it was a learning experience. 😂🤣

A coke where I live is 30 cl and costs 2 EUR, we order a cola not coke which would be cocaïne! In Paris terrace coffee is sometimes 8 EUR same as in Venice on the main square. Tourist traps indeed !
