We hit the MotherLode!~Panning for GOLD with the Boys 🌌

My boys have been out metal detecting with me and exploring since before they could walk so Treasure Hunting is in their blood! As soon as school finished today they were jumping around, desperate to get out their new Gold panning kit and find some Shiny :-)

The kit cost £2.50 so it's only pieces of Pyrite not real Gold, but it was great fun and taught them about the process of separating the paydirt and extracting the Metal. It contained everything you need; goldpan, paydirt, tweezers, snuffer tube, magnifier, and storage jar.

We opened up the bag of 'gold panning sand' and tipped it into the pan, then filled with water and started swirling it around with a circular movement. This makes the heavier Gold sink to the bottom, so you can gradually wash the lighter sand off the top.

It didn't take long before the Goodies started poking out from beneath! It's not something you should rush, you want to keep filling the pan with water and wash out carefully. But they were getting impatient and started picking out the biggest bits with tweezers :-)

The Magnifier worked well for inspecting the material but the snuffer bottle was useless for collecting even the smallest pieces of gold as the tube was too thin. So I let them fill up the storage jar with the big pieces so I could finish off the panning carefully by myself :-)

We must have got lucky with the box we chose because there was enough Pyrite in there to fill two jars! I would recommend this kit for anyone with kids, it's cheap, educational, and Fun. Plus us stackers need to train them up to follow in our treasure seeking footsteps 🌌
