# 157 - Aviation Commemoratives - Part 3

The Royal Canadian Mint issued this series of $20 coins to commemorate Canada's aviation heroes and achievments.

The series consists of ten coins issued two per year over five years, starting in 1990 and going to 1994.

For the first time each coin design contains a 24-karat gold covered oval cameo portrait of the aviation hero commemorated.

All the coins were issued in Proof quality with silver purity of 92.5% and each coin weights 1oz.

The first coin shows the Curtiss JN-4 (Canuck). Sir Frank Wilton Baillie, KBE (1875–1921) was a Canadian industrialist. During World War I, he turned his attention to the production of military aeroplanes, and was knighted for his contributions to the war effort. He was the first Canadian to be made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

The second coin shows the de Havilland Gipsy Moth. Murton A. Seymour was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1943 for valuable public service in connection with development of aviation.

The third coin shows the Fairchild 71c. James A. Richardson (1885-1939) was a pioneer of Canadian commercial aviation. He founded Western Canadian Airways in 1926 and helped open up the mineral mining development of the North with his air transport routes.
