# 161 - Aviation Commemoratives - Part 4

in #steemsilvergold6 years ago (edited)

The Royal Canadian Mint issued this series of $20 coins to commemorate Canada's aviation heroes and achievments.

The series consists of ten coins issued two per year over five years, starting in 1990 and going to 1994.

For the first time each coin design contains a 24-karat gold covered oval cameo portrait of the aviation hero commemorated.

All the coins were issued in Proof quality with silver purity of 92.5% and each coin weights 1oz.

The first coin shows the Lockheed 14 Super Electra. Zebulon Lewis "Lewie" Leigh, CM OBE (1906–1996) was a Canadian aviator. He was the first pilot to work for Trans Canada Airlines in 1937 and he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 due to WW II.

The second coin shows the Curtiss HS-2L. Stuart Graham (1896-1976) served in the Royal Naval Air Service, patrolling shipping lanes in flying boats. He was Canada's first professional peacetime pilot and his forestry patrol near Grand-Mère is regarded as the beginning of Bush Flying in Canada.

The third coin shows the Canadian Vickers Vedette. Wilfrid Thomas Reid (1887–1968) was an English aircraft designer and is considered one of the pioneers of the Canadian aircraft industry. Reid, together with a man named Newall, developed the design of the aircraft known as the Vedette. The design and production of the Canadian Vickers Vedette marked the true beginning of the Canadian aircraft industry.

The variety in your collection is amazing, you definitely have a lot of stuff that I won't see sitting in my LCS.

Most of my collection was bought on Ebay or some Internet stores. Some Canadian commemoratives were bought in LCSs in Vancouver, Canada.
