# 164 - Simon Bolivar

Yesterday I was going through some old boxes when I found this:

I did not remember having this coin and, to my surprise, it is an enormous coin.

According to a certificate that I found inside the box, this 20 Balboa piece was minted by The Franklin Mint by order of the Panama Government, to honor the great Latin American Liberator Simon Bolivar.

It weighs 129.59g (4.17oz) with silver purity of 92.5% with Uncirculated Specimen finish.

At that time (1973), it was the largest and heaviest coin in circulation anywhere in the world, according to The Franklin Mint.

The obverse shows us the coat-of-arms of Panama and the reverse show us Simon Bolivar.

Enormous, AWESOME and beautiful! Very nice reverse coat of arms. Thanks for sharing that coin with us. It is a first look for me, and I bet to many here! I can imagine your large collection in many old boxes, and
imagine your surprise to "come across" that big one andrealize that you had it, LOL!

It was exactly as you described. I had totally forgotten about this coin and some others...

That is one chunky piece, can you imagine if these were common in circulation. That would be one heavy pocket full of change!

That is why I don't believe in what The Franklin Mint said...

I believe it is a non circulating commemorative coin Ronaldo !! It is a stunning coin tho my friend !!!

I don't believe that it circulated. I was only repeating what The Franklin Mint said in its pamphlet.

Cool. That's a nice big coin!

It is very cool in your hands...

That’s a really nice looking coin and a chunky one as well.

They say it circulated, but I don't believe.

Nice coin, I have some of them the only year that is still missing is 1975.

They minted it from 1972 to 1976. Do you have the proofs also?

In BU I have 2 of the commemorative coins from 1971 with the same desing and 2 from 1973.
As proof I got 1972,1974 and 1976.

They are easy to sell here in Europe and do a good price. The proof version esepecially. These have a COA.
