# 218 - A Corinth Stater

in #steemsilvergold6 years ago (edited)

Corinth was a city-state (polis) on the Isthmus of Corinth, the narrow stretch of land that joins the Peloponnese to the mainland of Greece, roughly halfway between Athens and Sparta.

Corinth was one of the largest and most important cities of Ancient Greece, with a population of 90,000 in 400 BC.

There this coin was poured, circa 350-338 BC. It is a AR(silver) Stater, weighting 8.5g.

The obverse shows us Pegasus flying left, koppa below.

The reverse depicts a helmeted head of Athena facing left, gamma below, with dove in wreath behind.

Its value today is around U$500.00.

Athena and Pegasus, a very classic combination. Did it happen only in Corinth?

No. Corinth was the most famous city that minted Pegasus and Athena coins, but Locri, Syracuse, Dyrrhachion, Alizia, etc. also minted such coins.

Very nice one. That Pegasus is in very good shape. That's a much more interesting design than a lot of ancient coins. You can definitely see the artistry involved.

I like this coin very much. It would be my avatar, but I like the Standing Liberty Quarter more...

Very nice coin is it Billion or high grade silver I've been looking at some on eBay recently

It is not billon, it is high grade silver. I don't know how much high.

Now that's an old piece of silver, thanks for sharing, very interesting, cheers.

This is, among my Ancient Greek coins, the one that I like more.
