# 274 - Crispus Attucks
Continuing the Modern Commemoratives Dollar series, we will present you today the 1998-S "Crispus Attucks" graded by PCGS PR70 DCAM.
All coins of this series weight 26.73g with 90% silver purity. They were issued in Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated finish.
They will be presented in the order they were minted.
This coin was issued was issued to mark the 275th anniversary of the birth of Crispus Attucks. He was the first patriot killed during the Boston Massacre in 1770, one of the events leading up to the Revolutionary War.
The obverse of the coin features a depiction of Crispus Attucks by John Mercanti. Notably, no likeness of Crispus Attucks actually survives, so the image represents what he may have looked like.
The reverse of the coin features a detail from the proposed Black Patriots Memorial. The bronze sculpture was designed by Ed Dwight, who is also given credit for the coin design.
A total of 110,428 coins were minted in San Francisco. The issue price was U$37.00. The actual price is around U$325.00 in this grade.

Did they build this Black Patriots Memorial?
Not yet. Congress authorized the National Liberty Monument in January 2013. On September 8, 2014, the United States House of Representatives passed the joint resolution approving the location in the capital of a memorial to commemorate the more than 5,000 slaves and free Black people who fought for independence in the American Revolution, but it was not built yet.
