# 91- The State Quarters - Part 8
Starting in 1999 the US Mint issued a 10 years program that honored each of the nation’s states in the order that they ratified the Constitution or were admitted into the Union. They chose the $.25 coin to be the vessel of the homage.
All the coins obverses show the same profile of George Washington and the reverses were usually chosen in popular contests in each state.
All the coins that I am presenting here are NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo with 90% silver purity and weight of 6.3g.
The first is the 2003 "Missouri". It features Lewis and Clark returning to St. Louis. The famous Gateway Arch is also visible in the background.
The second coin is the 2003 "Arkansas". It features a collection of symbols related to the state. This includes rice stalks, a diamond, and a mallard duck.
The third is the 2004 "Michigan". It features the Great Lakes. Four of the Great Lakes border the state of Michigan and have played a big role in the state’s history.

I've never been satisfied with the design on the Michigan quarter. Other states tend to put items that represent industries or landmarks in the state, ours is basically just a map. I get that the lakes are our most important resource, but I would have liked to see some more variation in the design.
There are others that show us only a map. They were the people's choices.
