The End of an Era — but Honeybadger just getting started!

Hi Friends,

A little over 5 years ago the very first bitcoin ATM machine went live — ever — at a Waves coffee shop in downtown Vancouver.

I know, because i was there, and i have a picture from outside the glass looking in on the night before it went live. I would include it, but i can’t find it in my e-mail history right now. But whatever, it looked like this:

Here’s a wide view, ATM on the left, and in the deep bg the original office.

And the room...

(Leon apparently was looking for lost satoshis!)

What most people don’t know, however, is that the original founders of Bitcoiniacs (the operators of the machine at 900 Howe St) had their first, and thus the first, bitcoin office over by Granville Island near Kits...

Funnily, it’s actually in a Lane — like a “nice” alley!

I can remember buying bitcoin here before i really even knew how the wallet scanner worked, and when you had to pair it to a pc wallet, and also, being excited when btc jumped from $100 to $110 in a couple of days... 😳😁🤩

Here’s some btc prices i’ve celebrated since then

What a crazy good time the last 5 years has been being a bitcoin zealot! People are still sceptical, cynical, ignorant and daft — but few are calling it a Ponzi scheme anymore. Although, the general public is still woefully ignorant of blockchain tech.

But whoah, whoah, whoah... i’m getting off track.

The gentleman who bought Bitcoiniacs a couple-three years ago from the original 3 dudes is my partner, and although he is the BIG boss, he an i are pretty close. Anyway, some shit went down, yadda yadda yadda, competition sic’d some unwanted heat on us re: the regulatory nature of having a money services biz operating out of a coffee shop, yadda yadda yadda, we’re moving out tomorrow morning!

The ATM will remain at 900 Howe, but the back office (where some serious tx and convos went down) will be no longer. Thankfully we can laugh at EVERYBODY ELSE in the Vancouver bitcoin scene because A: we have the best rates and B: we are not DBs and nor do we condone any Douchebaggery. Ironically, by giving up the “Flagship” office there is gonna’ be a lot of rent-money saved, and also, and more importantly, we are removing a target that was sure to be hit at some point, were it to remain — there was often A LOT of cash in that room, and no glass or partitions or anything! It’s amazing we never got jacked in the office!

Maybe all this is boring af to you, and if so i apologize and will cut this short. But i just thought a few of yaz out there might like to hear what it was like around here, when bitcoin came of age.

Cheers mofos/ettes! from @thedamus

Not as of today. Mail came already.

I always knew that bitcoin and @thedamus went hand in hand. On to bigger and better things my brother from another mother.🍆🍆🍆

Yeah bro! 2020 Lambo tour through Italy!!!

🤟😎

This is freaking awesome TD! I wish I would have gotten involved somehow years ago when BTC was first starting to come on the scene, but I enjoy hearing the stories about your beginnings. And while I may have missed the first ship, I am glad I am still getting into it fairly early to reap some of the rewards that are still left. :)

We’re all still early adopters at this point...
😎👍

A very interesting story. I like to know how things start, develop and end. In this case it is not an ending, but a relocation. Good luck, my friend!

Cheers Rono! Hope to see ya back up here sometime soon.
😎👍

My daughter finally decided to move to Toronto. That means that it will take a little while to see you in Vancouver. :=(

Someday, someway Rono!

😎👍

love this post! as if it was that long ago! here in the cold north uk even using the word bitcoin is enough for people to look at me like i am slightly deranged, i dream of a day when i could go to a cafe. go to anywhere and see an atm, brilliant stuff, glad to see at least some part of the world has this happening, i wish you much success! and please see if you can sort this sort of thing over here i would have loads of crypto if all i had to do was use an atm, thank you for sharing this, much respect to you

Hi beckie-g, thanks for comment! It’s crazy, i literally go to btc ATMs more often than i visit my bank’s machine... although my behaviour is not the norm here, it is possible 🤟😎

I enjoy learning more about the btc ATMs. Fantastic forsight on this @thedamus.

What a coincidence you guys "aquired" the first ever bitcoin atm. That's pretty awesome damus ☠️

It’s pretty cool... although the nuts & bolts still need constant attention.

👊👹

Dang, man. Those were some low numbers there! Congrats on getting in early and being able to cash in on some of the climb.

Probably a good idea to get rid of the flagship. If it saves money and allows you to be more competitive and safe, then it's probably a good move. That being said, I've always wanted a flagship lair, so I'm sad for you to lose the special place.

Thanks tmwnn, but truth be told we already have a new HQ for the playas — with a bar attached (next door) so things are good! Best to let the Machines handle the a-holes 😳😜😁🤣😂👍

howdy there thedamus! sounds like you guys did great but getting out of the shop will be even better and you were so smart to get into bitcoin early! lol. genius!
