Silver Starter KitsteemCreated with Sketch.

Do you remember what it was like when you were first starting out with your silver/gold collecting? Everything was new and different, and it was probably difficult to know where to start. So many options and so little knowledge. One of the best cures for that is experience. One of the best ways to get experience is by jumping in. It's even better when you can jump in at a place that's recommended by someone who has been there.

Constitutional Silver Starter Kit

Here's a little kit that I gave a friend who is starting their collecting journey. They didn't know where to begin, and didn't know that "junk silver" was even an option. It's a little more than an ounce of silver, but it gives a lot of different options for a new collector to consider.

As you can see above, there's a 0.0723 troy ounce Roosevelt Dime which is the easiest to get because it was minted more recently. There's also a Mercury Dime which is the iteration prior to the Roosevelt. It's likely worn down to around 0.0715 troy ounces of silver. These are a little more difficult to get, but aren't "rare" yet. There's also a 1964 quarter that is the last year they were made with 90% silver. I included the newest one because it was in the best shape so likely still has close to the original 0.1808 troy ounces of silver.

There are also two Half Dollar coins that each contain around 0.3616 troy ounces of silver. After taking wear into consideration, it's probably a little less. The one on the right is a Franklin Half Dollar. The one on the left is a Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The Franklin sells for a small premium over spot. The Walking Liberty was considerably higher.

In the second image you can see the reverses of the coins. They are all in fairly good condition as you could see all the date on the obverses, and the details are still clear. The Mercury Dime has seen the most wear.

Next Generation of Collectors

I think it's important to help newer collectors get a start so they don't have to spend as much time getting established. The sooner they catch the bug and start collecting, the better. It means they'll have more time to amass a collection that rivals our own. Life is about helping others and seeing them go further than we were able to go. This is just a small collection, but with a variety of designs and weights, its purpose is to help spark imagination and dreams of the other coins that are available to be acquired. It's not just a gift of money, it's an intention to encourage a lifetime of collecting.

Like they say:

Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime.

So, if I indeed were to 'chase' these coins as an absolute newbie stacker, where do you look for them?

These ones might be a little more difficult for you to get since you're in Europe, but often the local coin stores in the US will have them. Sometimes they're out of stock because the coins aren't super expensive, so big-time collectors will buy out all their stock.

Canada also has "junk" silver that's 80%. I'm not sure about the European countries though. @gdwcoins is a great resource and probably has some suggestions on "junk" coins you could get.

Great Constitutional starter kit — some tasty morsels right there!

I would have liked to put some Barbers in there as well, but I don't have many of those myself. Actually, I'm a short on the Walking Liberty Halves, but I wanted to get them off to a good start, so added it in too!

Sweeeeet!!!

Well done @themanwithnoname! That kind of advice is what builds a strong market. Thank you!

Thanks, man. That means a lot coming from you. :)

howdy sir Blondie! I like the philosophy. Hey that brings up a good question though about people in other countries...I wonder if they also used to half coins with more silver in them that got thinned out?
