Everybody's choice might be different. If you love music, the first thing you might consider when buying a phone is the speakers. Yes! How clear and loud it is. If you are the camera type, I'm sure you wouldn't think twice before buying that phone with 16 pixels front camera.

Now let's get this straight, virtually every phone can produce good sounds and clear pictures. But, every phone isn't the same, that's why the prices are different.

Price? That's surely the first thing to consider. Your budget at hand determines what you will buy. But, before going for that phone you've dreamt of, here are things you should consider;

I'll be revealing some hidden details on smart phones. They are things you should know. Probably, after reading this post you might love your phone more or think of buying a new one.

RAM (Random Access Memory)

If you are not a computer geek or you aren't familiar with computer words, don't worry, I'll explain this.

RAM is also called the main or primary memory. Without it, the phone won't work. It is simply the house that stores information. Don't misquote this for the external or phone storage. It's different and they serve different functions.

Let me give you a better explanation.

RAM are basically used for holding active application data. Informations and storage of applications that are running.

Your operating system is an application too, and it is also using an amount of RAM on the phone. When you have a phone with a 2gb RAM and you switched it on and discovered 1.6gb RAM or less, don't be worried. Parts of your RAM is already in usage by the OS.

Why is RAM that important?

Ok, the OS is using a part of your RAM, when you turn on another application, it needs a specific amount of RAM too.

Oh! You like multitasking? Your RAM takes it all.
Multitasking simply means operating or running more than one app at a time. If you are on discord and you still want to use WhatsApp same time, both apps will need RAM.

Have you ever wondered why your phone hangs whenever you run many apps, or anytime you open a particular app? It's simple, your RAM is simply not enough.

If you are the type that loves multitasking and operate on powerful apps, then you need a phone with a bigger RAM.

Ideally, it's better to use a phone with at least 2gb RAM. RAM is one of the key considerations in getting a phone. That's settled!

PROCESSOR

Okay, all this terms might be strange to us. We all looks at how fancy and how great the mega pixels is before getting a phone. If you don't know what a processor is, then don't stop reading.

Processor is considered as the brain of the device. What does your brain do? It process all information, whatever you do is first transfered to your brain before action. And it does it fast. That's what a processor of a phone is meant for.

It processes inputs received by the applications on the phone. Generally, how fast your phone works is depended on the processor. The larger the processor, the faster the smart phone.

Now, don't get things missed up between RAM and processor. A RAM simply stores the application when it's in use. A processor determines how fast the application works. RAM can influence the overall performance of the phone. A bigger RAM and a lower processor might not make your phone hang, it will function well. But, having a lower RAM with an higher processor isn't recommendable. When you multitask, and the RAM gets filled up, the processor becomes slower. It needs an higher RAM to work fast with.

STORAGE

We are all familiar with this. All the mighty and powerful apps we want needs somewhere to sit on. Those images you took need to be placed somewhere. They are all kept in the phone's storage whether external or internal.

ROM is a storage too but it holds data of running apps. Your storage only houses the app. The ROM becomes free when you no longer use the app or when your phone is switched off. The storage aid already occupied and can never be free unless you delete what you kept in it.

That's why you need a phone with a bigger storage. Although, you can get an external storage, fix it in and continue using it. But, external devices has it's disadvantages too. It easily gets corrupted. When you get a phone, the storage is one thing you should consider.

BATTERY

It is important a phone has a good battery capacity. That's the life of the phone. When your battery runs low, it switches off and your phone become useless.

You wouldn't want a phone you are only able to operate for just an hour. The more function you do on your phone, the more power it drains.

Ideally, battery capacity of 3000muah and above are recommended.

Is that all?
Yes! I believe. Camera quality, display, speakers, OS versions are secondary.

Every new phone comes with the latest OS, so you shouldn't bother about that.

If you love pictures, you can snap with it and check the picture quality. Checking the mega pixels isn't safe, a 16 MP camera doesn't necessarily mean it is better than a 12 MP camera. There are more to camera than you know. Perhaps I'll focus on cameras on my next post.

You want to play music on your phone and you need one with a loud speaker? You can consider that too.

I still repeat, they are secondary. The four points I gave earlier still makes these secondary requirements work well.

Here is a specification of a smart phone. Infinix hot 5.

  • RAM - 2gb
  • Processor Type: Octa-core 1.3 GHz Cortex, Mediatek MT6580
  • BATTERY: 4000mAh
  • Internal Storage: 16GB
  • External Storage: microSD, up to 32 GB
Others are secondary. But these are the main components of a mobile phone.

With 2gb RAM, multitasking is possible with ease on a hot 5 but it is limited too. How a phone with 3gb RAM and above is sure different from how a phone with a lesser RAM will handle it.

It has 1.3Ghz processor, not too fast but perfectly okay.

BATTERY capacity of 4000mAh can take you a day without charging.

I'm not recommending this phone. Just a better explanation of all the terms I explained should be the focus.

I am satisfied with my own phone, but I wish it has a better camera.

This is very informative... Using a phone of 1GB is just like you're living in the ancient world.. Sometimes you feel like smashing your phone against the wall when you need to do something urgently and the phone is lagging

Nice post @afolwalex

Yes.. I can relate too. Lol!

Well said but I believe most of this phone now don't put the correct specifications and with time the mobile phone wear out of the specifications you actually purchased

Or is there a situation that there is a duration while the gadget is most effective like (BEST BEFORE)

Any phone that places a wrong specification should be sued I guess. If the phone isn't entirely with a 2gb ram and it was stated. Then, the company is to be blamed.

Regarding your second question, I don't think so.
