Astronomical observations #21: Veil Nebula

in #steemstem5 years ago (edited)

Welcome to the next Astronomical observations. In this part, I present to you further objects of the deep sky, which are certainly worth attention. The Cygnus loop is a large supernova remnant in the constellation of Cygnus. It is located about 1440 light-years from Earth. This object has a low brightness and a large surface in the sky. It is well suited for shooting with long exposure times. I will focus here on the two most known and bright parts of this nebula. I invite you to read.

NGC6992/6995 - Eastern Veil

NGC 6992 is an emission nebula in the constellation of Cygnus, which astronomer William Herschel discovered. It is a remnant of a supernova. This object is located southeast of the star Epsilon Cygni. A larger 15 X 70 binoculars will show this object under dark skies. NGC 6992 together with NGC 6995 is called the Fibrous Nebula. This is a very nice object for visual observation through a telescope. However, you need a large instrument over 8" (200 mm) in diameter and a dark sky. Above photography with a long exposure time showing the colors of the object. At higher magnification, some parts of the picture appear to be rope-like threads. Although the nebula has a relatively high +7 magnitude, it is spread over such a large area that the surface brightness is quite low. The object is great for using the OIII nebulizer filter (a filter that blocks every wavelength of light outside the double ionized oxygen wave), all light from this nebula is emitted just at this wavelength. Thanks to the OIII filter, almost every larger telescope will be able to show this nebula, cutting out all the light pollution of the suburban sky. Some say that you can see this object in the sky without any optical help, except for the OIII filter held straight in front of the eye.

NGC 6960 - Western veil, so-called the "Witch's Broom"

By Hewholooks link [CC BY-SA 3.0 licence]

NGC 6960 is the western part of the Cygnus Loop. This object occupies more than three times the area of the sky than the full Moon. The bright star of 52 Cygni located in the heart of NGC 6960 isn't associated with this supernova. This star is visible in the night sky with the naked eye. The colors obtained in the photograph with the long exposure time above are the result of the rapidly moving gas of the nebula, whose molecules are constantly colliding with each other. It is a well-liked object, commonly known by observers as a ''broom''. In summary, the brighter nebula segments have the names of NGC 6960, 6974, 6979, 6992 and 6995 main directories. The easiest to find is 6960, which is behind to the star 52 Cygni which is visible to the naked eye . NGC 6992/6995 are also relatively easy objects on the east side of the loop. Other objects appear only in the photographs. At the end below you can see just such a picture showing the entire Cygnus Loop.
