Monthly global earthquake update 1 - May to June 2018

in #steemstem6 years ago (edited)

Earthquakes are interesting as they show us that the Earth is alive. Shall we check in on Global Earthquake activity in the past month?

We first we should give credit where credit is due. Most of these great images come from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) that has an outstanding website:

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/

Here you can search on a map of the world for all earthquakes greater than Magnitude 2.5 or Magnitude 4.5 (Moment Magnitude or Mw). I am trying to compile this here for easy viewing and will try to do this monthly as a bit of a Global update (this is post 1). All maps show earthquakes greater than Mw 2.5.

Lets start with the ring of fire because well, globally that is where most earthquakes occur:

Interesting to see Hawaii with lots of earthquakes from the recent eruption there.

Alaska and northwestern Canada and USA earthquakes.

Summary:
Overall, busy on the Pacific rim like usual, quiet in Africa and Europe, busy on the Hawaii hot spot.

Largest event during this period was the Mw 6.2 earthquake in Tajikistan. Fairly deep at 112 km, but not a very high magnitude event for the month.
