Toddler Sensory Play: Make Your Own Kinetic Sand

in #steemstem6 years ago

Science and sensory play mix wonderfully for young children who are still exploring the world and learning simple science concepts. Today my three-year-old son and I embarked on another one of our afternoon adventures. We raided the cupboards for some ingredients and headed off to the sandpit to borrow some of the sand which we mixed with some science to create our very own Kinetic Sand.

Kinetic sand has hit the stores and has become quite the interactive activity for kids around the world. The sand has the ability to mesmerize you and satisfy your senses as you squish and rub it between your fingers. Kids are having a blast slicing, smashing and scooping the stuff, in what is definitely a grand sensory experience!

My kid and I enjoyed making the sand and then we spent the rest of the afternoon messing around with it and learning from it!

Sensory play encourages scientific processes because problems are solved using the five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. -https://www.parentingforbrain.com/sensory-activities-importance-sensory-play/

You can make your own Kinetic Sand by following this recipe:

  • Add 6 cups of sand to your basin.
  • Add 1 cup of Corn Starch to your sand and mix it in.
  • Mix a quarter cup of water with 3 tablespoons of dishwashing soap, and this to the sand and corn starch.
  • Add a few drops of food colouring (optional).
  • Use your hands to really mix everything together well. If you find your sand is too dry add some more water little by little until you are happy with how it feels.

By stimulating your child’s senses you are helping their brain develop because when a sense is engaged neural pathways are being created to assist with further learning in later years. - https://www.parentingforbrain.com/sensory-activities-importance-sensory-play/

My child wasn’t the only one having fun and learning this afternoon, I had a blast too and I was amazed at what a few household items could create! Don’t be afraid to try something new and make a mess! This is a great time to bond with your child or students and create fun memories!

Much love - @sweetpea

Thanks for sharing this recipe i love kinetic sand especially in winter when it is hard to go play in sandpit it is a good compromise:)

I hear that letting your kids play in dirt is good for the development of their immune system and kids like this tend to have fewer or even zero allergies.

I grew up on a farm and have zero allergies and rarely even get sick. I guess it works 😎

We love kinetic sand here at the mumofmany household. I must say, I actually enjoy playing with it as well.
Never thought to make our own but might give it a try, definitely adds an extra element to the activity if they make it themselves.
Thanks for sharing!
