Pain - A Short Story.

It had all started one beautiful Saturday morning...the day he lost all his family. It was early December and the harmattan season had just started. Eje woke up, as usual, whistling, he hurried to fetch water for the house before his mother woke up.

His mother was sure to flog him soundly if he failed to carry out his duties. He was the firstborn after all and he had to show good example to his younger ones. He was used to the work, he had accepted it as his lot in life.

After fetching water, he proceeded to sweep the entire compound.

"Good morning, my son." He heard his mother say with a smile.

His heart leaped with gladness at the sight of his happy mother. He wanted his mother's happiness more than anything else in the world. She had suffered enough in her lifetime. She was left alone in the world with her eight children. Her husband's property disappeared like smoke before her very eyes just a month after his death, courtesy of his relatives.

She, who had been a big madam in her husband's house was now a common foodseller who struggled with the best of them. She had learnt the slangs, how to speak pidgin english. She had learnt to smile and laugh at jokes that were laud and had bad taste. She had no choice...she had eight mouths to feed and send to school.

"Help me with setting the fire so i can start preparing the food."

Humming and dancing to a tune only her could hear, she went about her cooking rituals. Soon all was ready for another day of sale.

A loud scream came from the backyard where his sisters were playing.

"Mama!" The scream resounded like thunder in his ears, full of fright and shock.

He and his mother ran towards the sound and saw a terrifying sight. His two sisters had been bitten by a snake!

"Chineke! How did this happen? Call auntie. Run...tell her to come immediately."

It was common knowledge the doctors were on strike so going to the hospital would be a complete waste of time.

He ran all the way to auntie's house. She was a doctor of some sort but she was not home. With tears, he ran back home to meet another calamity.

Rose was dead! She had been hit by a car while crossing the street trying to find someone to help her sisters.

In just one day, he lost three sisters. He found he could not sleep that night. He found himself staring at the ceiling thinking over all that had happened that day. He just could not understand it. Why did all that have to happen to one family...his own at that!

Then he noticed a sort of restlessness among his sleeping sisters. Soon they woke up crying and holding their stomachs.

"Eje, it hurts so much. Help...make it to, , please. I cannot bear it."

A sound at the door made him look up and he saw his mother with blood in her mouth dragging herself into the room.

The poor boy was confused. He ran to their neighbors and knocked but no one answered his cries. He screamed for help but no one came to his rescue.

In this way, a young boy lost his family in one day for no just cause at all. He decided he was cursed, after all that was what everyone said.

He stood at the edge of the little town where he had been born. This town was all he had known...happiness, love, sadness and now loss found him here.

There was nothing else here for him. He had no future where everyone knew his history. Perhaps, going somewhere else would grant him some luck and happiness for a change.

With hope in his heart, he took a step towards his future.

Sort:

Una historia cargada de mucho dolor. Y un final que invita a avanzar ante las tragedias humanas. Conservar la esperanza en el corazón y dar un paso hacia nuestro futuro.
