What is the true value of Steem?

My friend Troy got me thinking about this with his recent article:

Is Steemit A Game To You or Something Much More?

It's More Than A Game

Troy said this of his mother:

"She is one that does not believe you are paid until it is in your hand."

In some ways she does have a point. But about Troy's questions:

"Is Steemit a game for you?
What motivates you to continue?
How real is the Steemit community to you?"

These are some great questions, Troy.

In some ways, Steemit is like a game. Interacting on Steemit is an enjoyable way to pass the time. You can meet and play with friends on Steemit, just as you meet with friends for sporting events and board games. Engaging successfully on Steemit requires strategy, tactics, and planning, just like playing war games.

But Steemit is so much more.

The friends you meet here seem to be a cut above average. In some cases, light-years. Steemit puts at your fingertips the power to communicate with other like-minded souls across the country and around the world. Not only to interact with words, but also to reach out financially, offering one another practical support when in distress.

Steemit is like a bank where, simply by visiting and interacting, you store away value. You can actually use "real world," i.e. fiat money to buy STEEM and keep it here in your Steemit wallet.

Steemit is a practical tool right now.

It's not "pie in the sky." With a little onboarding help from a friend, anyone can be on Steemit in a matter of hours and can transfer money (in the form of STEEM or SBD) to anyone else on Steemit, anywhere in the world.

There is a growing marketplace where goods and services can be purchase right now, today, denominated in STEEM. Transactions are fast, frictionless, and free. How fast? How does three seconds sound?

But the Bank of Steemit provides yet more.

On the permanent Steemit blockchain ledger, you can safely, permanently store your deepest thoughts, your hard-won ideas and opinions.

Steemit is a vault of the strongest design, constructed of material that is theoretically more durable than the granodiorite that has preserved the Rosetta Stone. Steemit is made of "blockchain mail," a very fine-grained fabric with the potential to ward off the raining sword-blows of the ages, to effectively repel the attacking hordes of time. Steemit is an amazing archive.

I have never succeeded in publishing a mass-distributed book. The books of a very few, the famous, the authors of renown, are lovingly cherished in libraries and preserved in attics for the world of the future to enjoy.

Not so with mere mortals. Our writing languishes in file drawers destined to be hauled off to the dump. Or on obscure hard disks that end up on the shelves of resale shops or at the recycler, ultimately to be crushed and lost forever.

But thanks to Steemit,

in the back of my mind I cherish a glowing vision of my children and their descendants visiting my Steemit Library and reading these words decades, maybe centuries from now. That is what motivates me to persist in writing here.

Steemit in its entirety is already a vast store of detailed, personal, knowledge, tested in the crucible of the life experiences of thousands of individuals who come here day by day to share their tutorials and their histories with like minded communities.

I've written before about some of these amazing features and benefits of Steemit, HERE for example, but the facts about its value bear repeating. The incredible, immediate value of Steemit needs to be shouted from the housetops. The utility of Steemit should be hammered into the thinking of many, many more people.

I don't quite understand how an enterprise like Steemit can continue to scale, representing vastly huge amounts of data. For the moment I'll take it as an article of faith. I'll trust the skills of the witnesses—witnesses that we as a community support—to stay ahead of the technology curve and maintain the reliability and integrity of the Steemit blockchain.

When the world finally recognizes the true value of Steem, the moon is not the destination to expect.

Perhaps you're scanning my words on Mars in 2137 via a neural implant. Maybe you discovered my Steemit Library in the Steemit corner of the Interplanetary File System. Perhaps you're a Steemholder yourself. I hope so.

P.S. If you have an "in" with anybody at Steemit, Inc. - Would you please ask them to get rid of these damn, extremely annoying "off-website" arrow/boxes? The have, overnight, made Steemit ugly. There are much better solutions.
