Chapter Sixty

Grayson leaned his head against the window of the private jet, watching the ground grow blurry until it disappeared.

The rest of his weekend with Aryanne had been the best few days of his life. He'd put any kind of agenda on a back burner and simply enjoyed her company. And her company was enjoyable in more ways than one.

He smiled faintly as he pictured her face when she'd spotted the hill at the ski resort reserved for tubing. She had lit up like it truly was Christmas morning, so they'd ditched the skis for a few hours in favor of the uncomplicated yet deliriously fun act of flying down a hill on rubber saucers. After which they'd returned to their cabin, and because it had snowed all day long, the scenery was enchanting. She'd introduced him to the art of building snowmen-a first for him-and then they'd surrounded their creations with snow angels. It had made for some kick-ass pictures.

When they'd had enough of the snow she'd led him inside and made homemade hot chocolate, then coaxed him to cuddle and watch A Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life.

Both movies, which he'd never seen, carried a theme of love, hope, and forgiveness. They were an exact reflection of the girl he watched them with, and for those few hours he'd forcibly ignored his father's voice in his head and truly allowed himself to believe.

Of course it hadn't lasted. James had seen to that. Just before leaving Grayson had been called into his father's office. First they'd discussed the trip, what was expected in terms of the people he would meet and the impressions he would make, then he'd brought up Aryanne for the first time since the day he'd met her.

He'd told him about the recent downfall of the friendships she put stock in, but the look on his father's face was one of disinterest, and he'd felt his stomach sinking.

“That’s not nearly enough to warrant the continuation of this juvenile relationship…However I will consider allowing it to go on a bit longer if you take a new tact.”

According to James, Grayson had yet to test Aryanne's loyalty. He'd outlined exactly what he thought Grayson should do to accomplish this, leaving no room for argument. It was clear that his father was running out of patience.

He pressed a hand against his stomach trying to subdue the churning. Just thinking about his father's plan was making him nauseous. Bear with me Ary, he silently urged her. You've passed every test so far, don't let me down now.

Glad Ary had a chance to work her magic ... innocently ... before the diabolical game continues.

Haven't read this far yet. I'll be counting
the chess squares in the meanwhile ;)

I read the prologue; you're a very good writer. I'm not familiar with the family, but it seems your book could be based on a real family somewhere in history with the ailment described. Is it by any chance? Again, great work!

Well thank you :) The ailment is entirely fiction, but I was referring to Henry the Eighth (the King who is well known for beheading Ann Boleyn. )

Thanks for clarifying! I'd hate to think that ailment was real, even if it would be rare. 😄

How many novels have you written? I'm writing my first novel here on steemit.

Three completed, two in the process ;) Actually, two of the three are part of a series (that are nothing like this one ha) as is one I'm currently working on. Unproven is my only finished stand alone work.

Oh, that's great, I will definitely check it out!

Thank you, is Unproven on sale? Where may one pick up a copy?

what a cover picture of your novel.very eye catching

Thanks, glad to hear it ;)
