Amid Fire Water-Fueled Chaos The Tribe Escapes The Reservation

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in a series about the Wild West and the incredible story of an 11 year old German boy, Hermann, who was captured by an Apache war party from his family's farm in 1870 in Central Texas.

He's now about 15-16 years old at this point in the story and has become a full blown warrior and is both terrified of the White man and also hates him.

In the last post his band had decided to try reservation life once again because they were worn out from all the hardships and stress of constantly being chased and hunted by the Army and the Texas Rangers.

Today's story

Ok, so Hermann's band went to stay on a reservation again since they saw few options. The problem is, bootleggers kept smuggling whiskey onto the reservation and every time they did that, fights would break out and people got killed or injured.

It was the worst rot-gut whiskey too, Hermann told his story in 1927 during Prohibition which meant that moonshiners were selling White Lightning at about 190 proof and he said what they were getting on the reservation was comparable in strength!

ANYBODY would be crazy after drinking that stuff

Well, shoot...no wonder the Indians were going crazy when they drank it. That poison would knock your hat off. The problem with drinking is that it brought out old arguments and grudges among the different bands of the tribe and they'd start arguing and fighting.

Plus add in the fact that everyone was miserable, frustrated, restless, depressed, angry, lost, and hopeless. The warriors were proud and independent and now you have them imprisoned basically.. with nothing to do.

You had these magnificent warriors who'd trained their whole lives to fight.

This is Jay Tavare, an American Indian actor, but he looks like a warrior, so you get the picture. He's probably a different type of warrior for his heritage and culture though:

Then you add Fire Water. Gee, what could possibly go wrong?

One of the unfriendly bands came and demanded Fire Water from Hermann's group and a fight broke out in which one of Hermann's group was injured.

Well, that didn't set well with them so Hermann's bunch went over one night and helped themselves to the other band's supply of whiskey and a big fight broke out but thankfully it was broken up by soldiers.

They decided to run away again

But since they were the one's who started it, Hermann's group decided to leave the reservation again!

They figured when the punishment came down for the fighting they'd get the worst of it since they were the aggressors. But before they left they decided to go on a big drinking spree because a big shipment of Fire Water had just come in! lol.

That was crazy but I reckon they didn't want to miss out on any of the whiskey.

One last big drunken bash

Well, it was a disaster. The worst results from drinking anyone had seen. They went nuts fighting with each other. Squaws were even fighting with each other, cutting each other to pieces with knives.

One squaw got drunk and slept with another man so her husband followed the Apache tradition and cut her nose off and forced her to go live with the other man in a wigwam that was on the outer edge of the village.

After a few days, (probably to recover) Hermann's band gathered up their stuff, including grabbing the Fire Water, and lit out at night. They traveled for a day and night and then camped in a nice, wooded area.

They thought their troubles were over but they were really just beginning. Hermann's story continues on the next post.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

Sort:

Basically if the smart ones wanted to sort the Indian issues out all they had to do was send wagons of whiskey out for the Indians to attack and wipe them out that way. Alcohol was just too irresistible to them.

Howdy sir cryptoandcoffee! Yes sir, it looks like they allowed it onto the reservations on purpose to thin the numbers but it could have been used before they got to the reservations like you suggested, I wonder if that was ever done.

Oh it wasn't anything like we had these days. Kerosene water and all sorts of things were used to cut it. Besides just shipping the first run which is poisonous.. Back then there wasn't any rules.

Hang on... The tribe would get "money" more like welfare payments. The had the money and got swindled as quick as they were given it if not before...

Same as today. "percap" happens and that week there is always drunkenness excess and insanity... Always. Police are really busy then on the rez.

Oh and that always has an uptick in violent crimes. Which as an Indian.... Guess what. Fbi... And federal time not state. Only applies to Indians and not white people. They get lawyers if charged at all.

Sounds like the moonshine the old timers used to make in the Stills in the woods on PEI. People have died drinking it. It’s made legally now and sold in the Liquor stores. I tasted it but too strong for me.
Are you FBI? Like Glooscap... Good you are weighing in on the stories.

oh, they had the moonshiners in Canada too huh? What is Glooscap?
And what is that statue, is that on PEI?

No Glooscap’s huge statue is in Nova Scotia. I pass it when I go to see my sister.

Mi'kmaq mythology- Glooscap was great in size and powers. Nova Scotia was his bed and PEI his pillow.

He is the benevolent culture hero of the Micmac (Mi’Kmaq) who taught the people the arts of civilization and protected them from danger.

Oh I see, so they had to have a huge statue, a small one wouldn't work at all! It looks like a really nice one.

Howdy sir ganjafarmer! Wow, kerosene water?? holy moly, no wonder it was so deadly!
And if something goes down like a violent crime it's the FBI that handle it because it's some type of federal land, not sure of the classification except reservation. Yeah, the whites were good at swindling people.
Thanks for the good but shocking information!

Oh just wait until you see what they thought was good. And the crap was usually the lowest quality as as much as they could get on trade.

Then from there there was the excess party!

And yeah kerosene as well as plenty of other stuff was used to cut it.

Dang that's evil! I had no idea. They didn' t need to cut it they just did it to make more profit no matter what it did to people.

Oh the bia officer? Post long held to earn off screwing them. And then who you think allowed this to become issues?

Yep the bia. We are registered like cattle. I got a blood Quantum degree paper. Yellow star? Even better the only race to be issued 🆔 cards and identifed

howdy today sir ganjafarmer! what is a bia officer?
Blood quantum degree paper??
Well we all have to carry around ID cards, most of us use Drivers Licenses, so is that a big deal?

Bureau of Indian Affairs organization in the department of interior that is cast with counting the Indians just like cattle horses and sheep.

Yep if you don't have enough blood Quantum or enough percentage that the government says that your Indian you are disenrolled or not eligible for benefits.

On top of it it is a separate identification card that you need on top of your driver's license. And specifically identifies you as being a member of that tribe.

And it has benefits and major draw backs...

But name another race in the USA that has a specific identification requirement....

Posted using Partiko Android

oh, Burea of Indian Affairs, I should have known that! It figures that there's lots of corruption there and has been since the department was started.

Well to keep fraud down don't they need to keep track of how many and who is there because of the benefits?

What kind of draw backs is there with having a card, that doesn't sound like a bad thing on the surface of it.

I'm not for government keeping close tabs on anyone, I'm just asking questions, I sure ain't for government
meddling, control and authority over ANYONE'S lives but that's where we are today and it just looks like they
got you all under their thumb already where they want ALL of us to be.

Things have really gone to the dogs now. The Indians really are/were the guardians of the earth and that last saying really brings it home. Who is the warrior who said the quote?

Black elk I'm going to guess...

The rainbow prophecy.. Which is argued and debated.

Thanks @ganjafarmer. He certainly was a wise man, perhaps a shaman.
Is there more to the prophecy? I’d like to read it.

He was but those words were claimed to not be his. Is what it is...

Howdy redheadpei! yeah, what ganjafarmer said! lol. Most quotes are attributed to someone but that one wasn't. Ganjafarmer is Native American, Shoshone-Bannock.

Ha! Good one!

who's Pedro? sounds like he belongs in your neck of the woods!

I’ve never heard of him either, Janton, nor the television series.

I'm lost. Pedro sounds like your local street vendor down there.

Alcohol has certainly caused a lot of people a lot of problems! I really wish we could rewrite history.

Howdy tonight Melinda! I wish we could but we don't even seem to learn from it most of the time! someday they'll come up with a pill that you can take which will nullify the effects of alcohol.

A pill would be great! And you are so right about us not learning from our mistakes.

Yes, as a race we've achieved great things in so many ways and have been a disaster in other ways, total idiots!

Howdy esteemapp and thank you so much for the upvote!

Howdy Sir @janton.
Wow! 190 proof has a kick like a mule and guaranteed to create havoc and insanity. There's also a lot of backyard stokers over here and at times people die from drinking their concoctions. Drugs are also a big problem as I have read that the dealers cut washing powder into their cocaine in order to create more bulk. Imagine snorting that stuff!
Blessings!

What a disaster we are as a race to do such things! it's amazing that we're still here at all!
Amazing that God didn't run out of patience, wipe the board clean and start over or that we haven't
all killed each other!
but on a happier note, have you ever drunk 190 proof whiskey? lol.

Hahaha, I don't think so my friend, the closest that I came to 190 proof was "Vodka" that a friend brought to me from Russia. I used to almost die from hangovers and that explained my allergy to alcohol.

Oh wow, so the allergic reaction was severe! So you would literally be severely sick for a couple of days?

More than a couple of days my friend, but I am a very stubborn guy that has cost me much pain in my life.
Thankfully they say that with age comes wisdom.
No use to worry about what's done, but to learn from it and to improve.
Blessings!

Well sir that's a great attitude to have now and no bitterness or anything. That wouldn't fit your lifestyle anyway and you don't have time for that. lol.

See, now that's why I never liked drinking parties! They always get just a little too rough.

That high of an alcohol content, they could have used it for cooking fuel. I doubt that would have gone over very well, though...

haha! yeah what a waste when you could drink it! But yeah especially when ganjafarmer said that they used to cut it with kerosene water, yikes!

You ought to have a book published!

Cheers.
