An Outcast In The Wilderness

in #story5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in a series about the Wild West and the incredible story of an 11 year old German boy, Hermann, who was captured by an Apache war party from his family's farm in 1870 in Central Texas.

He's now about 16 years old at this point in the story and has become a full blown warrior who hates and fears the White man.

Yesterday's post

In the last post Hermann was forced to run for his life from his tribe after killing the medicine man who had killed his master, chief and adopted father. He knew he was being chased by a war party so he rode like crazy for many, many days.

Thanks to the chief's sister he had a magnificent horse with great speed and incredible endurance which gave him a huge advantage. He traveled through rugged hills, vast plains and deserts. The deserts were the worst.

Finally he came upon a deep canyon with a small stream at the bottom.

Today's story

It was well hidden and in many places the walls were straight up and down and it took him a long time to find a path down to the water. The water was clean, clear, and pure. There was thick grass along the stream with large Cottonwood trees lining the banks.

Lots of animal tracks were there of those who came to drink at this hidden oasis. It felt like a little slice of heaven to Hermann. Up on one of the canyon walls was a nice cave which he took shelter in at night.

He decided to stay there. Fresh water, plenty of game that came right to him and an abundance of grass for his horse. They had everything they needed. It was like a secret oasis.

He got used to being alone

Hermann kind of lost track of time when he was there but he reckoned he was there for about 8 months but it could have been longer. He got used to being alone, really for the first time in his life.

But after a few weeks he was used to it and accepted the fact that this was his lifestyle now. A hermit in the wilderness with no family, no tribe, no friends, but an enemy to all because that's what he considered the Apache to be.

A rude awakening

One night he was asleep in his cave when he was awakened by a strange sound. He wasn't sure what it was but it sounded like a human voice. Then he heard it again, it was definitely human because this time he recognized that it was a laugh.

He got up and walked along the edge and looked around a rock and he could see a large camp fire a couple hundred yards away. He couldn't tell what race they were so he carefully made his way down to the banks of the stream and stealthily approached through the trees until he could hear their conversation.

Rats afire!

They were dog gone Apaches! And from his own tribe no less... he knew them. Pulling back, he went back to his cave and gathered his supplies including a bunch of dried venison, got his horse and rode out of there.

There was a gap in the canyon that emptied out onto a plain above the spring and that's where he went.

He bade farewell to his little Garden of Eden and struck out toward the East, running from the same enemy that he'd run from 8 months ago and just like then, not knowing where he was headed or into what.

Aw.. what a shame. Hermann had to give up his paradise and go wandering again. But then, if that hadn't happened, we might not get to hear his story.

Come to think of it, his 'stint' with the Apache and his training, had stood him in good stead. Can you imagine any sixteen year old kid now in Hermann's place?

Howdy today sir Vincent! That is so true, without the training he had he couldn't have lasted for long on his own because it was brutal, he said one more day and he couldn't have kept going before he found that canyon and that was days without water. No way he could have done that without all his training and conditioning.

Morning janton, this lad was tough and resilient through and through. He listened to his intuition and made good choices. I am sure that his parents would have been very proud of him if they had known.

Great quotes too janton!

Love your quotes janton,

Howdy today angiemitchell! I agree about Hermann, yes his intuition kept saving his life didn't it?
I don't know how much he told his parents when he got backt to them but maybe we'll find out later
in the book, I've only read a couple pages ahead.
Thanks for the kind words, I'm finding some good quotes for sure.

Howdy Janton! I am quickly catching up; reading all the stories before I go to New York, which is tomorrow. It's going to be very short family trip so I will be back in three days. I am taking my computer with me, however, I am not sure if I am going to have time to chat. Will see.

Anyway, poor Hermann! His life took another unexpected turn and now he has no one. Not even that paradise place that he found and he doesn't know that his family is still alive. I am just happy knowing he will survive and I am really curious what's next.

Howdy Miss Lena! New York?? New York state or New York City?
why would you want to be there. If you want to travel to the United States I'd think you would want to go somewhere important like Texas. lol.

I know, Hermann is in a pickle like always but somehow he survives. I think because his mama and grandma are praying for him. Too bad he doesn't even know they exist like you said!

Anyway, have a great trip!

howdy esteemapp and thank you for the upvote!

What a great place to call home for 8 months! Funny that those Apache did not see the signs that someone else was there.

Howdy tonight Melinda! Great minds think alike! I was thinking the same thing but maybe they assumed that others had stopped by on their way like they had and didn't know anyone was there permanently. Or, they were far enough away from his main living area that it wasn't very disturbed.

I wonder if that place is still as secluded today?

Howdy today Melinda! I took off early last night and never got back to my comments, that's a first!
But anyway, wouldn't it be interesting to know if that place was still there? I bet it is, it's too bad we
can't find out. How did you go for you yesterday? I never got a chance to ask you.

I noticed that you were particularly quiet last night! I have been using the v2 app and the glitches I am encountering with it are keeping my comments low, but I am so impressed with the eSteem team. They fix things almost as fast as I find them! This is going to be a great app when they release it!

Yes they must be very dedicated! Is that just for phones?

Yes. I started using their phone app when I started on Steem because it was so much better than the Steemit interface was! I got used to it and have never used anything else. I do all my Steemin from my phone, so I am particularly excited to see this new app get up and running smoothly. It's slowing me down, but will be worth it in the long run once they get all the glitches fixed! So many people around the world do not own computers, and do all their Steemin from their phones.

Oh I see, I get it and that's a brilliant aspect to focus on.

Sounds like it was a pretty close call, there. It sort of makes you wonder what the rest of his tribe had been doing for the last eight months. It sounds like they decided to leave the reservation again, anyway.

Howdy sir fotosdenada! That's a good question, I'm sure some stayed out and some went back to the reservation because they didn't want to be running and hunted. But yes, at least part of them stayed out because those that he saw in his canyon had just come back from Texas stealing horses.

Hermann did well to keep his sanity-8 mos. alone sleeping in the cave with just a horse for company. It did sound like the garden of Eden though. 🦌 🐻 🌲 🌺

Howdy tonight redheadpei! Yes I agree. For never being alone before he got used to it. But, he always proves that he's a survivor. Is it Mother's Day in Canada today?

KNow yourself but be part of the tribe............I like that
Thank you for a good story. Need the campfire to sit around!

Howdy justjoy! good to see you here. I'm writing your username down so I don't forget to visit your blog!
