Hermann Crashes A Comanche War Party

in #story5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in a series about the Wild West and the incredible story of an 11 year old German boy, Hermann, who was captured by an Apache war party from his family's farm in 1870 in Central Texas.

He's now 16 years old at this point in the story and has become a full blown warrior who hates and fears the White man. And in fact, has taken many a scalp.

Yesterday's post

In the last post Hermann was aching for contact with other Indians so he decided to try and make contact with the Comanche even though his tribe had been at war with them off and on for years.

A Comanche war party sighted

It wasn't long after that when he spotted a party of Indians and determined they were Comanche. He trailed them all day and waited until they set up camp for the night.

Comanche War Party:

He tied his horse up a short distance away to where he could make a quick escape if he had to run for it.

In the cover of darkness he snuck up within hearing range and listened. The language he couldn't understand but they must have been talking about the days events. They seemed to be in a good mood, laughing and joking.

Hermann had always liked the Comanche

From the times he'd been around the Comanche(when they weren't fighting each other) he'd found them to be very enjoyable to be around.. fun-loving and liked a good laugh. But on the other hand, they were fierce warriors:

But generally it was a nice change from his own tribe who were very somber and didn't laugh unless someone got hurt or they were playing a cruel joke on someone(like him in the early years).

Of course, this is just Hermann's experience with his small band. I don't want to castigate an entire tribe with a negative impression. There were many different Apache tribes and sub-tribes and bands.

He makes a grand entrance

Hermann wasn't sure how to approach them so he decided to just do it and get it over with. He took a stroll from the darkness right into the light of the campfire without announcing himself.

There were shrieks and war hoops and yells as all the braves sprang to their feet and dashed into the darkness!

They didn't know WHAT he was..

He must have looked like one crazed, wild, vicious, strange kind of Indian. Being white but with long, wild, unkempt hair, scraggly, filthy and rough after living in the wilderness for over a year. It had to be a heck of a shock to them!

Coming from the black darkness some of them probably thought he was some kind of ghost or scary spirit, I think he probably looked like death warmed over!

So anyway, there he stood..all alone in front of the fire, looking around to see what would happen next. Not a soul in sight but he half expected to feel the pain of arrows flying in from the darkness.

The she-devil wanted to kill him

It wasn't long before they all came back and surrounded him with yells and war whoops but they kept their distance as they tried to size him up. lol. I can just imagine this scenario. There were a few squaws and they came closer to him.

The most aggressive was a hideous old hag that looked like a witch. She only had one eye, was hunched over, had missing front teeth, stringy hair sticking out everywhere, she had a fierce countenance and got right in his face screaming who knows what.

He found out later that she wanted to kill him right there, that he could bring them nothing but trouble. Hermann maintained his cool (even though his knees were knocking a little bit) and made signs of peace.

Luckily someone spoke Apache

After the old lady finished screeching at him a brave came forward who spoke Apache so Hermann was able to tell him that he was a poor, lonely Indian in need of food and that he was an enemy of the Apache.

He explained the situation and how he came to be Indian and what happened to his chief and with the medicine man. Also, how he loved the Indian and hated the white man and that he had the scalps of whites on his shield and that his race considered him to be a mortal enemy.

He told them that he wanted to become a Comanche and make war on the Apache and the Whites. Another brave approached and said that he had seen Hermann with the Apache so that confirmed his story.

Acceptance

After Hermann had told him his story in detail, which they listened to intently, they told him that he was welcome to stay with them as long as he wished, and could accompany them to the main village the next day and their big chief, Cotopah, would welcome him.

He went out to get his horse accompanied by two braves then squaws brought him plenty of food to eat and fixed him a comfortable pallet to sleep on.

For the first time in over a year he laid down to sleep feeling content and secure...and felt like he was among friends.

In the next post we'll see how it goes for Hermann with the Comanche.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

I couldn't stop laughing about the reaction of the Comanche when Hermann made his entrance. It was priceless! And I am so happy for Hermann that he was accepted. Finally, a part of the story that made me happy. Keep up the great work @janton! : )

Howdy Butterfly! Thanks so much. No one else has mentioned the part where he got that reaction so thank you, I thought it was hilarious. He shows up and they all scatter like they're terrified! I get the same reaction when I walk into a room or building.

But if that's the only time you've been happy with the story(with good reason) then that might be the only time it happens! lol.

HaHaHaHa! You do not get the same reaction when you walk into a room or building. Nice try! LOL!

I liked the Comanche even back in the part of the story when they were at war with them. Something about them.

Maybe you were a Comanche in another life ginnyannette. I know a bit of a stretch but interesting concept don't you think? I have been told that I had a past life as a Native American Shaman.

That is a fun thought. I could see you as a shaman. Who knows. I believe in old souls too.

Howdy ginnyannette! I like them too because they were more fun loving and readily accepted him. I just saw an old photo of Hermann in his full headress when he was an old man. lol.

Cool. I trust it will show up in a future post :)

Howdy tonight ginnyannette! yeah I've found a couple of photos that will be in the last post or so.
Too bad he didn't have anyone take any when he first got back into white society!

Evenin’Cowboy! Hermann knows no fear it seems. Good he finally was accepted by the Comanches and he’s and got food and a sleep.
Love all the wise native sayings.

Howdy redheadpei! I think he had to of been desperate to do such a thing but it worked out alright!
I've been finding some good sayings I think, thank you I'm glad you enjoy them too!

Good story' brother :)

Howdy sir altafalazzam! Thank you and thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Welcome brother.. :)

Sounds like that went a lot better than it could have... lol. I bet the Comanche felt a little embarrassed at being so easily snuck up on, too!

haha! They sure should have been embarrassed! good point sir fotosdenada!

Hi janton, that was easy! Is there a but coming ...... lol. It is my suspicious nature, haha.

Howdy angiemitchell! I don't know, I haven't read any farther today. lol. You are wise to have a suspicious nature though!

Haha, I am a back to the wall, guns on the hips kind of a girl janton. Has served me well, lol.

haha! I really admire that, you have to be thinking, alert, and be prepared for the unexpected but unfortunately 95% of the people are clueless as to what is going on, aimlessly wandering around being preoccupied with only themselves with no other awareness.

Haha, I was always taught as an early education teacher to put my back to the wall and know what every child is doing in the classroom. People watching is one of my favourite pastimes janton.

oh I bet you love airports and shopping centers then! Airports are the best for people watching, I think anyway!
But yeah, with kids you gotta be alert at all times. lol.

Very lucky for Hermann that some of the Comanche spoke the Apache language, and that some of them saw him with the Apache, thus confirming his story. I hope his life got better from here.

Howdy sir Vincent! Yes you are so right, he got lucky again. lol. big surprise then but we know who was praying for him and to whom. But yes, his life was a bowl of cherries after that. lol. No, I have no idea, I haven't read any farther but if his past is any indication he'll go through some very harrowing and close calls!

Excellent, sir. Hermann has a destiny, that’s for sure.

This is my first time using esteem. It’s the one you use, right?

Howdy sir dandays! yes sir on esteem, the generous upvotes they give for free is amazing and if you do your commenting through them the size of the upvotes increase. So it's kinda like earning them as opposed to the fake building your rep score by simply buying it like so many of us do. lol.
But to be honest, I was just trying to find a way to grow my sp because I'm constantly frustrated by not being able to upvote as many people as I want, and even then it's a lousy one cent vote! Can't wait until I have a big enough account to make a difference and actually be able help people. But ocdb boosts your rep score along with building your sp.

See, when they first started they were returning 150% on ocdb so people were sky-rocketing! Now it's like I said, lower, I read two different places that it was 112% return. Someone should do a search and find the best type of service out there, someone who's good with numbers.

I’m back again, Janton, this response is on esteem. I’m going to post with it today I think—question: At the bottom of my app, that bell icon has “99+” in red on it, does yours? It’s as though I need to clear every single message I’ve ever had. Is there a simple way to clear that?

Thank you!

Howdy sir dandays! No I don't have that icon but I'm using my desktop and not a phone. I'll ask about that icon and get back to you.

Howdy sir dandays! I talked to the expert and she said she just ignores that icon. I think they'll adjust things like that after they get their tokens launched and things are going smoother.

Thank you! You were right again, Janton, good call. I just posted on esteem and received a $0.65 Upvote—that’s nice.

Howdy sir dandays! yes it's a no-brainer isn't it? I think it will be at the top of the alternative platforms to use in a short time.
