"The Indian Boy" In A White Man's World

in #story5 years ago (edited)

In today's post Herman shows off his skill with a bow and here's another great painting by the amazing Chinese Western artist Zhou Shu Liang.

Doesn't the guy in the back center look like a white kid? It's Herman! lol. The title of this one is called Searching For The Rogue Bear.

I wonder how many arrows it takes to bring down a big, crazy bear?

Howdy folks, greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in a series about the Wild West and the incredible story of an 11 year old German boy, Hermann, who was captured by an Apache war party from his family's farm in 1870 in Central Texas.

He's now 20 years old at this point in the story and has become a full blown warrior who hates and fears the White man. And in fact, has taken many a scalp. He's been with the Comanche for a few years now.

Yesterday's post

In the last post Herman crashed a couple of revival services by joining in with his Indian style of worship which was not appreciated at all! lol...and he continued to adjust to the white man's culture.

Today's story

Herman was an expert marksman and archer so he amused himself by demonstrating his skill to anyone walking or riding by who would cooperate...and almost everyone did. He became known far and wide as The Indian Boy.

He would make blunt tip arrows and the kids, young men and adults would challenge him to hit them at great distances, out to 150 yards.

They'd also wager him drinks that he couldn't hit them. Well, needless to say the saloon and hat business boomed because of all the drinks he won and all the hats he destroyed. He'd shoot their hats off of them if they wanted him to.

Unsurpassed skill with a bow

Normally they'd set their hats out at a hundred yards or so and say there's no way he could hit them but he'd punch a hole through them every time. It became his favorite pastime and everyone in town played along and were amazed and entertained.

He did become somewhat of a terror for strangers traveling through who didn't know that it was a game. lol. He came to know and become friends with everyone in the community after he learned to speak German and English.

The hardest for him to get used to was sleeping inside. He'd grown up spending nights outside under the stars or in a tepee and from the beginning with the Apaches had been trained how to stay awake on watch and spent many, many nights as a watchman.

After about a year he stopped having urges to go out and attack and kill as he'd become accustomed to.

This is another Zhou Shu Liang painting called Circling The Enemy which is what Herman would do on a raiding party attack, they would swarm, confuse, and terrify the enemy.

But that lust for blood was fading fast, there was no need for it. His deadly enemies, all whites, he found to be gracious and kind.

Much to his shock they weren't trying to steal the lands of the Indians and kill them all as he'd been told.

They were just trying to live and grow a community. They weren't even at war with the Indians, which blew his mind.

Well I guess Herman's wild adventures are over, the next post will probably put ya'll to sleep!

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

Hi Janton
I'm a sucker for a sweet ending. Thank you...........lol.
He must have been a sadly confused young man. I love the bit about the 'revive us again meeting'. I hope the Christians had a sense of humour, love and understanding.
I'm sure you will be as entertaining in the future as in the past.
Looking forward to reading.

Howdy today justjoy! Thanks so much for your kind words, this was a very fun story to tell and most of it was easy except the violent, bloody parts. I think the local townspeople were very patient and understanding with him. Except when he got into the church services! lol.

It warms my heart to know that Hermann sees whites as being gracious and kind. He should with all of the drinks they gave him. LOL! Man, I love those paintings!

Howdy again Butterfly! I agree and thanks so much for appreciating those paintings!
Yes, the townspeople were totally tolerant, patient and kind to him. Except in church!

Great paintings!! The night sky is incredible! Herman could speak German!!

haha! I know, I bet he was the only Comanche ever that was able to speak German!
I love the paintings too, thank you sir kaminchan.

Keep’em coming Janton. 150 yards with an arrow, though? Are you frikkin serious? Wouldn’t that make his the best archer ever, I mean, is that even possible?

Howdy sir dandays! I didn't know much about distances so I asked someone who does and he says that 100 yards is standard and 150 is very doable. He said in medevial times 200 and 300 yards were common distances but not with great accuracy. so yes, if Herman was stretching it...he wasn't stretching it very far. lol.

Evenin’ Cowboy! I enjoyed following Hermann’s life adventures and like happy endings.

It took awhile but Hermann is back with his family and speaking German again. I wonder if he embellished his abilities and some parts of the story. We’ll never know!

Howdy redheadpei! well I don't like to hear that you like happy endings because none of my stories have those! lol..except this one. The only thing I find hard to believe is shooting arrows 150 yards. Everything else I believe. But I agree, it's a great story and one of the best I've ever heard.

I've tried archery both the traditional bows and the new composite competition bows. They have all these funny poles hanging off them to hekp balance, but it really does help keep her steady.

Howdy abitcoinskeptic! They are marvels of technology and engineering aren't they? Do you think it's possible that Herman was shooting his bow 100 or 150 yards? It's the only part of his story that I have doubts about but I haven't looked up how far you can shoot an arrow with a regular bow.

100 yards aligns with olympics archery which is 90m. So it is very possible and high accuracy. Also the distance record is probably well beyond this.
Im not sure about 100 years ago bows compared to modern ones but I know medieval long bows had a range of 200 to 300 yards but with low accuracy.

Oh that helps alot, thanks alot sir abitcoinskeptic! Are you an archer yourself?

It's very popular in Korea, they have practice ranges everywhere including basements and such. I especially like to try the unique outdoor ranges once in awhile. Ex. Over a river or something.
But I just borrow equipment. Furtest I tried was ~ 65yards and I hit the 2 yard square target maybe 2/10 times.

I bet that takes years of practice to get good doesn't it? That's very interesting to know that it's so popular there!

I think we could all learn a lot from Herman....Go outside every once in a while.

Yes sir, it's a radical thought, especially for many dedicated steemians! lol. some of the Indian philosophy we could learn from too.

Good day janton, what a light bulb moment or moments for Hermann to realise that the white men were only kind and friendly...... well most of them! lol. I love the first photo with Hermann in it. Once you pointed out the white boy, it made it easy to see it! Thank you.

It is quite a skill to shoot a hat at one hundred yards - wow!

Yes, he was an expert with a bow, it would have been fun to see! I wondered about those distances with the bow but someone who knows about it said those were normal distances.

But yes, what he realized about the white man, him being totally Indian in thinking, means that we just needed to have meetings of the two cultures and we could have got along and merged to a great degree. Instead the army tried to kill them all.
In other words, if the tribes and different white nations could have met in peace and learned about each other's cultures I think we would have worked something out if the Indians could be made to understand that millions of whites were coming and it was useless to try and stop them.

So very true. Such a shame that there were no wise spiritual men in the right place to make the decisions janton. How different it would be then and now. Acceptance of differences and diversity is taking a heck of a long time.

I'm so glad to hear that Hermann is reintegrating with his kinfolk. It somehow warms my heart lolol.

howdy tamaralovelace! yes, I agree, he needed to get back with his family, it just took him a few months to realize it!
