The Mirror

by Jaundré van Breda

Standing in front of the mirror, she looked at herself in disgust. She was too fat, too thin, too much of everything and nothing at all. She was starving in more ways than one.
“We choose what we see,” said her husband with folded arms, standing in the doorway. “And that mirror shows you everything you don’t want to see,” he added as he turned away. Whether he was right or wrong, it wouldn’t change anything. It wouldn’t make her love herself like she used to. She wasn’t looking at herself. No. She was looking for herself.
