The peak of Ismoil Somoni

The former names of this peak are the Peak of Stalin and the Peak of Communism.

The highest peak of Tajikistan, the highest point of the former Soviet Union (7495 m).

In the general list of the highest peaks of the world is on the 50th place. The mountain lies in the ridge of the Academy of Sciences in the Pamirs, at the junction of the latter with the ridge of Peter I.

The history of the discovery of the mountain is long, unusual and connected with the study of the Pamirs by Russian and German researchers.

Since 1876, when the Alai military expedition led by General M. D. Skobelev was introduced to this region, the zone of Russian interests, backed by international treaties, has since then spread to virtually the entire Pamir.

From this time, intensive research of this area began by Russian researchers: AP Fedchenko, IV Mushketov, VF Oshanin, AE Regel, GE Grum-Grzhimailo.
