The Land of Spirits was agog with surprise. What was a human being doing here? Most times, when human beings came to this place, they were already dead, and it was their spirits which proceeded to settle in this otherworldly land. So to have a living breathing human here was as strange as could be in the Land of Spirits.

Rather than being afraid, Joromi rose to his feet with delight and said, “I am Joromi, and I have come here to engage your best in wrestling.” A loud murmur washed through the crowd of spirits, before a large, transparent mass, maybe like the amoeba in the microscope, pushed to the front of the crowd.

A deep, resonating voice addressed Joromi: “You are brave, but even more foolish to come here desiring a wrestling match. Humans cannot abide by our rules.”

Joromi replied defiantly, “do not underestimate me. Mention your rules, and I will see if they are to my taste.”

“Alright,” said the shapeless spirit, “we have but one rule: all wrestling takes place in our great wrestling circle, but you must know that anybody who is thrown down in the great wrestling circle dies, because the floor of the circle is so enchanted.”

At this Joromi threw back his head and laughed. “Is that your rule?” he asked. “And here was I, thinking you’d say I had to cut off an arm or put out an eye. If that’s all to the rules, can we begin wrestling? Words tire me quickly.”

And so began Joromi’s greatest wrestling tournament. The wrestlers in the Land of Spirits were seven in number, and they were to face him one by one.

Now there is something you must know about spirits: the more a spirit looks like something from the land of the living, the less powerful it is. So a spirit that looked like a human, or animal or human item would be weaker than one that looked radically odd.

Joromi entered the wrestling circle and waited. Very soon, the first spirit wrestler entered the circle. It looked human, but its head was turned backwards. As soon as the match was called to start, Joromi rushed, grabbed the spirit, and threw it down. It died at once.

The spirits were all surprised, but not too impressed. That was their weakest wrestler. But they would be in for the shock of their lives, as Joromi threw their wrestlers one after the other.

Soon came the final battle. The champion of the spirit wrestlers was veritably grotesque, with a twisted form, and seven heads and seven arms. But Joromi was not afraid of it.

The battle was joined, and Joromi and his opponent sweated at it for seven days. But alas, Joromi is a human, no matter how impressive his strength is, and eventually, he began to tire. Soon, he could hardly move to fight, and the seven-headed spirit lifted him above its head, whirled him around, and brought him down to the earth with a mighty crash!

Joromi was dead.
