The Anunakis, who were they? Part 1

in #story6 years ago

The term Anunaki is the name of a group of Sumerian deities and akadias related to the Annuna (the "fifty great gods") and the Igigi (lesser gods).
The name is variably written "a-nuna", "a-nuna-ke-ne", or "a-nun-na", meaning more or less "those of the royal blood" while other groups postulate what it means (Anu=Sky,na=y, Ki=Earth), described as the fifth generation of gods in the Babylonian epic of creation, the Enuma Elish.
Sumerian legend has it that there is one more planet in our solar system, called Nibiru by the Sumerians, which has an elliptical orbit similar to that of a comet and takes 3600 years to make a complete turn around the sun.
Sitchin, as well as other researchers, maintain the theory that the ancient Sumerians knew of the existence of all the planets of the Solar System and the presence of one more planet, from which the Annunaki came, and that in their beginnings they were the genesis of life on Earth and the cause of the rapid evolution of man in our world through genetic intervention.

According to the Sumerians, their gods came down when there was no life. For the Sumerians, as for many other ancient peoples, their gods were flesh and blood beings who lived among them and from whom they learned many activities. According to a more recent Babylonian myth, the Anunaki were the sons of Anu and Ki, the gods brother and sister, themselves, the offspring of Anshar and Kishar (pivot of heaven and earth, the heavenly posts). Anshar and Kishar were the sons of Lahm and Lahmu ("the Muddies"), names given to the temple guards at Eridu, the site of Apsu where the Creation according to them occurred. The head of Anunnaki's council was the great Anu, (rather than being a god of heaven, Anu really means "heaven"), of Uruk and the other members were his descendants. Its place was taken by Enlil, who, in ancient times, was thought to be the separator of heaven and earth. This led to a conflict between Enlil of Nippur and his half-brother Enki of Eridu over Enlil's legitimacy as a Celestial and earthly ruler. Enki, (En=Lord, Ki=Earth), besides being the god of fresh water, was also the god of wisdom and magic, and was regarded by some as an alchemist. When the Igigi decided to strike and refused to continue working to maintain the harmony of the Universe, in Shappatu (Hebrew: Shabbat), Enki created humanity to take responsibility for carrying out the tasks that the gods had abandoned.
The Anunaki, on the other hand, were the highest companions (High Council) of the council of the gods and of Anu. They were distributed over the earth and the underground world or under the world. The best known among them were: Asaru, Asarualimnunna, Asarualimnunna, Asaruludu, En-Ki (Ea for Akadians), Namru, Namtillaku and Tutu (A conventional analysis of Sumerian religious practice can be found in A. Leo Oppenheim's book, Ancient Mesopotamia: Portrait of a Dead Civilization, a revised edition published in 1976. In this work, Oppenheim is very cautious about interpretations of the gods who "lost civilization").
