6 June 1918 - France

I have a friend who immigrated to the US, and he loved everything about the USMC. He looked like them with his short cropped hairstyle, worked out regularly, did multiple martial arts and never backed down from confrontation.
Well like my friend, whether it was sold to the public at large for political reasons and to build up the image of the corps, there are many people who think the corp is made up of the unbeatable soldiers.

Did you know that that reputation started on this day 100 years ago today? Quite cool huh?

World war 1, the Germans are advancing on the US/France/British forces and at that stage had punched a hole through the lines of the 'Allies'.

Troops were sent out the stem the German advance and plug the hole in the line.
The Germans had setup a few machine gun nests, artillery and dug in troops in the woods, and the advancing Allies didn't scout the woods so were mowed down quite badly.

After the marines arrived, they attacked in waves, and wouldn't back down. First SGT Dan Daly said a famous USMC quote: ""Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?"

At an eventual loss of 9 officers and 325 men of the bettallion, they eventually took hill 142.
At some point they were fighting 1 vs 12 men and winning.

From this battle the USMC (United States Marine Corp) started getting it's reputation which lives to this day.
