Compared to North America, the school day in France ends 1.5 to 2 hours later. And there is almost no extra curriculum sport activities organized by the school.

During our first year in Canada, we all discovered sport organized by the schools, mostly in high school.

Roseline spent only two years in high school in grade 11 and 12. As I remember, the only sport she played at school was tennis. She did not want me to go see her play, because she thought she was not very good. I respected her wish, but I would have liked to watch her play at least once.

Betty main sport in high school was volleyball. She started in grade 9 and was a member of one of the two school teams for four years. She was what they called a "striker", that is more generally known as an "attacker". One of her team mate in the McRoberts High School volleyball team was Jennifer Joyce who later became Canadian champion and record holder in hammer throw.

I have watched the team play multiple times, either during the regular season or in tournament. For a small school as McRoberts, they were reasonably successful. They went at least twice to the final round of the provincial championship and at least once got a medal, bronze if I remember correctly.

Betty also played in a club in Richmond. And her son Nathaneil is also currently playing volleyball in the same club.

Because I had a 7 seat minivan, I have often driven part of the team to tournaments in my car. Driving in the night with 5 or 6 girls, 15 or 16 years old, is very interesting. Because of the darkness, they seemed to forget that there was an adult who was listening to their conversation. I never interrupted them and I never made any comments later, but listening to these teenagers about being not understood by the rest of the world, but mostly by their parents, was quite an experience.
