Festive Wedding Procession on Road Less Travelled … Lombok, Indonesia – Street Photography

While taking the scenic route over mountain roads to Lombok Airport, we passed this lively and colorful wedding procession.

Turn off, then drop off

After spending 2 weeks on Gili Trawangan, I took a ferry back to Sengigi, from where I had arranged a taxi to the airport. Since I had over half a day before my flight, I arranged with the taxi driver to turn off the highway, and take me on a private tour of some coastal roads and smaller mountain lanes.

Traffic jam on road less travelled

While cruising along a deserted stretch of country road, we came across this “traffic jam” – caused by a wedding procession that took up most of the narrow road. As you can see, the wedding party was not really making any progress, just lingering around while observing certain rituals and celebrating the marriage. (Note – Everyone in the wedding procession was on foot. The other cars were, like us, simply caught in the “traffic jam.”)

After a few minutes, the festive party proceeded along the road, albeit slowly, and we continued on our way.

Lesson learned – If you have plenty of time, take the road less travelled. You’ll see more color and more beauty.

You are so right <3
I love this! Everyone is so colorful and beautiful.
It looks like a nice day for a wedding too. Have a safe flight! <3 <3

Indeed, so colorful. As you can see, it's actually a small and not-too-extravagant gathering of family and a few close friends. Many of whom are barefoot or in flip-flops. (No limousine rides for this party. None needed!! And no ostentatious feast at a bland hotel, either.)

But for them, it was a grand celebration, and most likely one of the major events of their year.

Another excellent shot and stunning descriptive skills. It is a rare gift, permit me to say, to be able to paint reality with the power of the pen and the ink of photography.

The admonition you gave above, quite well-received, is similar to that in the last stanza of Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken. Hear Frost:

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Ps: I have no choice than to one day travel a road either less travelled by or not taken at all; one can only hope not to find some time killers, like you did, or something worse: a charging buffalo or even a harmless lion.

Thanks for adding that. Having majored in English Literature, I know Robert Frost's lines very well, and that's why I added it to the post, and included it in the heading. It's a great phrase, one that is relevant to all of our lives.

Stay clear of wild, carnivorous animals!! If you meet one on a "less-travelled" road, it might make a great difference. Roar! CHOMP!!!

Now I see why you write so well, having majored in English. This is good to know. As for meeting wild animals on a road less travelled by, your advice is well received. I would roar and also run. Lol

The way you asked the driver to turn the car is clearly shown us that you a big lover of random travel and my friend these random travel always gave something new, something new to learn.
Planned travels always gave us what we had planned to get from that travel.

True. I tend to go where my feet take me.

Lovely photo
Weddings no matter the size or locations are usually beautiful. There is always something exciting about weddings.

True. Even a small, simple celebration such as this one. For those local people, this is clearly a MAJOR celebration!

True. It doesn't matter what's size a party or celebration is. What matters most is merriment and the people are happy

Asian weddings are much more colorful..!

I guess they love to express their feelings in colors.. I saw Indian people have color festival too..!
