TRAVEL MALAYSIA: Street Art in Penang

Besides it's glorious food, Penang is also famous for it's street art, which can be found scattered all around George Town and beyond. I'm the hugest fan of street art and Penang really is a dream for all things artistic.

Whilst many people believe that the street art is graffiti or random pieces of art, this in fact is not true in all cases. Although many street artists have now contributed to the street-art scene, much of it was originally, intentionally placed there by London-trained Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic in an agreed attempt to draw greater attraction to the historical streets of Penang. Most of his murals include mixed media, with some of his works displaying real motorbikes and bicycles, chairs or other physical objects.

Since then many people have added their contributions to the walls and buildings of George Town, displaying some of the most creative street art in the world.

There are many ways to discover the street art, with tours being available from most hotels or hostels. My advice would be rent a bicycle or walk around George Town and discover the gems for yourself. I find it much more rewarding that way. It won't be difficult to find them, just follow the crowds of people taking photos or posing alongside the famous artworks. You can also take a map of the street art with you for a guide.

I'm not here to tell you where you can find all of this, because that would spoil the fun ;-), but here is a mixture of famous and less well known street-art discoveries.

As mentioned, I prefer to wander and hunt out the street art of the city on foot, but if you really can't be bothered to hunt out the hidden gems then there are plenty of websites which provide maps for street art walks or tours. Here are a few of them:

It's also worth noting that the street art extends beyond George Town. You can read more about it in a recommended guide, here.

Have you been to Penang? What are your favourite pieces of street art there?

Nice!
Street art is always an awesome surprise when travelling, I will have to add Malaysia to my list :-)
Is the weather nice there this time of year?

The weather is nice all year! Even during wet season which is late year into the beginning of the new year, it is still sunny during parts of the day. If you go the guys at teammalaysia will take good care of you and show you around! I'll be sure to put you in touch!

Thanks so much, guys! Just checked it out. Keep curating awesome content. Love this weeks winners!

Love all the street art as well... in Ipoh and Melaka too. I'm sure you are missing us in Malaysia, eh @yasminep? :)

Ah yes I agree. Although I never made it to Ipoh. It's a total crime.. I know! Of couuuuurse missing you guys, especially that now seems like such a hopeful time in Malaysia!

Wow! Wouldn't have guessed that Penang would have such cool street art! I love the style - kinda wish Hong Kong had more stuff like this! Though I must say it is up and coming.

When I was in HK in October I found a couple of cool pieces, but yeah I totally get you. PLUS it would fit in so beautifully in HK!!! :-)

Oh no, don't get me wrong, there are definitely some cool pieces about, but not many that really reflect Chinese culture or imagery so strongly. I did find one with a Chinese aura to it, but turns out it's by Shepard Fairey, who's American. As you said, these, or at least street art in this style would look SO cool in HK too!

I went to Penang for a class trip in 2014. But it seems like I missed out a lot of the artwork. Not sure if it's because I couldn't find them or some of these street art are new

They aren't immediately obvious, or on the main road. You need to hunt around. They have been there for some time now I think 10 years or more, but there will be many more these days :-)

I see. I must have missed them then 😂
