Farewell Dorian

in #sublimesunday5 years ago (edited)

My #sublime Sunday was not the usual quiet day but one spent in the eye of a hurricane. Hurricane Dorian releases it’s fury across the maritimes on Saturday afternoon into Sunday.

First, I would like to thank everyone who said prayers and offered good wishes that Dorian would pass safely and quickly through my region. Love you folks.

Prince Edward Island lost power Saturday afternoon as Dorian’s angry winds howled outside. We were without power for seventy-two hours and some are still without electricity.

Many trees came down across the hydro lines. Some boats that anchored and thought to be in a safe cove, crashed into each other. Shingles were ripped from rooftops. Trees shook and lost their fruit too early leaving farmers in need.

Finally late Sunday the winds started to decrease and peoples here on the Island breathed a collective sigh of relief.

My feelings in a #haiku.

Farewell, Farewell Dori
Whipping gales and pounding rain
Shouting at the trees

Nights without power
In the dark, dismal dawn light
Wrecks on sea and land

No mercy, fierce fiend
Without a tear in my eye
I bid you good-bye!

During the hurricane, a poplar tree blew down in our driveway.

Fallen trees I saw the next day.

Many trees were completely tore out of the ground.

Since we had no electricity, Hubs got the wood stove going to heat water for coffee. I could cook soup and other food on the wood stove. Luckily I had stored some water to use during the hurricane.

Sunday Cat doesn’t know what’s going on with the wind howling outside and the house shuttering in bursts and starts as Dorian huffs and puffs.

Squirrel is curious the next day as he sees the tomato plants beaten down and tree leaves blown on the deck. He must have been safe in his hole when the hurricane whirled by.

Nothing like a little nourishment to make him forget the hurricane.

Skies were still overcast on Monday.

I was happy to see butterflies, bees and birds out and enjoying a beautiful day after Dorian passed this region.

Cedar Waxwings were in the pin cherry trees having a feast this morning. This one is proudly checking out the now quiet landscape from a spruce tree.

thank god you are all safe! thank you for sharing this update..

Thanks @eco-alex! After the devastation Dorian caused in the Bahamas, I didn’t know what to expect. Thankfully no one was hurt here.

Glad you made it through safely, and you have a mild Winter to give you a break....

Thanks @karbon. 💕 I hope you are right about a mild winter. 😊

So glad to hear you came through it safely! What a scary ordeal. It sounds like you were well prepared, though, and that certainly helps.

Thanks @goat-girlz! I couldn’t sleep and stayed up all Saturday night listening to the roar . Dorian sounded like a train coming.
It was getting hairy with the power down for so long.

Not exactly Sublime! Your poor trees and plants. I'm glad that it is done. What a horrible storm. Now you really do deserve a gentle mild winter.

The farmers had corn and grain beat down and fruit growers lost crops as the wind plummeted fruit to the ground before it was ripe.

I heard on the news that quite a bit of damage was done to the area around Anne of Green Gables’s author, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s homestead.

My tomatoes are finished. i did take some green ones off to ripen inside before the hurricane destroyed the plants.

I’m glad it’s over, Melinda and getting back to normal. 💕

I have seen the damage that can be done to farmer's fields when we get a severe thunderstorm with high winds. I can only imagine what they look like after a hurricane.

I'm sorry you lost your tomato plants. That is so disappointing after you have been nurturing them all season and it is only now that you would have begun reaping the benefits! Did you get any ripe tomatoes yet?

I did pick some green tomatoes off before the hurricane and they are ripening in a brown paper bag. At least I will have some to eat. 🍅

Oh dear. Thanks God you are OK. I can only imagine how horrible it was.
I am so glad to see your little friends were safe too.

Thanks Neli! It was scary with the terrible wind. Yes, the little friends were about the next day. 😊 💕

Hi @Redheadpei, glad to hear that Dorian has gone without too much damage. Hurricanes aka cyclones in Australia are so forcefully powerful.

Hi Angie! I guess we were lucky compared to the damage done in the Bahamas. The weather is more extreme all over now. 💕

Glad to hear you survived the storm and you have your power back on now. I know what it's like to have a hurricane ravage a community.

Thanks @free-reign. 💕 There is still a lot of cleanup to be done with so many trees uprooted. I was talking with an elderly woman today who still doesn’t have power and the hurricane torn the shingles off one side of her roof.

The picture of the squirrel on the post is great. I'm glad everyone is safe after the storm.

Thanks @abitcoinskeptic! 💕 It’s great to be getting back to my routine. Glad you liked the squirrel photo.

I think everyone is quite happy to see Dorian finally pass by after unleashing such a beating in a number of areas! Glad you are well, though so unfortunate about many of the damaged crops and trees in the area. It is always quite amazing to see how quickly the wildlife bounces back to normal as life continues.

For sure @plantstoplanks it was nice to see the arse end of Dorian. I imagine apples and other fruit will be more expensive this fall with being beat off the trees before they were ripe. 💕
