Sublime Sunday- Agave & Halifax Gardens

in #sublimesunday6 years ago

My submission to @sublimesunday intiated by @c0ff33a is a visit to the Halifax Public Gardens and #Haturday started by the lovely @saffisara.

I was in Nova Scotia at my sister’s home for my nephew’s convocation from Dalhousie University and the next day we took a tour of the gardens.

The main reason my sister wanted to go to the gardens was to see this Agave plant the gardens had outside for the summer.

She had read in the paper the plant was about twenty years old and starting to die after it bloomed.

There are 3 plants and the one with the long stem coming up from the middle is the one that flowered and would die soon.

The plants require protection from frost. They mature very slowly and die after flowering, but are easily propagated by the offsets from the base of the stem.

The Agave Plant is native to Mexico and Southwestern U.S.

Agave is used in the production of tequila. Agave syrup, a sweetener derived from Agave sap, is used as an alternative to sugar in cooking.

I was not familiar with using Agave as a sweetener but saw this bottle of the Agave Syrup at the grocery store.

Now for a few photos of other plants, large trees and ducks in the garden....

It was a beautiful day for strolling through the lovely gardens. Halifax is a fabulous city but after a few days I was ready to return to the countryside.

It's wonderful that you could hang out with @saffisara. You worked really hard putting this together and sharing your Sunday. Totally Sublime :)

I wanted to let you know that you won the Groovy School contest I did. Actually you were the only participant. I'm better at winning contests than entering contests. It looks real easy but hosting a contest is a drag. To actually make a contest work well not only is there an expense to put up the prize money but also advertising and reminders. I actually can't do that now. But I'm glad you are my friend and hope that peace and joy be with you. I would have included you in a steem basic income share anyway but this just gives me more reason to share sister:

Oh... and Saffi looks just like her profile picture ^^

Thanks so much Christopher for the steem basic income and being such a wonderful friend.
That is not Saffisara in the picture. It is my sister with me in the photo. She is 13 yrs. younger than me and blond like Saffisara.
Don’t get discouraged about the contest. I thought it was fun. ❤️

A wonderful blog with very picturesque images @redheadpei Thank you Joanne for reminding me about the name of that plant.....Argave. I have a few photos of them but could not remember what they were called.

Thanks Trudee @trudeehunter. The poor Agava plant looked pretty sad with the long crooked bare shoot. Perhaps you have some in bloom.

I'm not sure if they are in bloom here at the moment Joanne. The photos I have, were taken quite a while ago. At least I know what to call them now. (lol)

Wowzer!! So many pretty photos!! Definitely looks like a place I would love to visit!! It is kinda' sad that they die after flowering but great that they can be propagated. Glad you and your sister got to visit and share the visit here! 😊

Thanks Dee. Sis and I try to get together on special occasions. We always have a fun time. ❤️
I’m way behind on here. 😊

Oh man. How beautiful on a special occasion.

I am so happy to have found you. Probably the best friend I've never met lives in PEI. She and I have just flat been through the wars together on line. Another close on line friend lives in Ottawa and dreams of Halifax.

So. My plan is to ride the Maritimes. Next year, I hope. I'm running out of time.

Thanks for a lovely post. I really do appreciate it.

Jeeze. Forgot. Agave is really common here. I see them bolt and die every year, it's part of the natural way of things here. They really are exotic in Halifax.

Thanks Tom @bigtom13. A motorbike ride to the maritimes would be nice from Ottawa. Let me know if you take the trip.
The Agave was a big hit in Halifax.

It is so Beautiful out there! I loved your pictures...especially the pigeons and the ducks!! The flowers and trees are pretty and I love the titanic replica. These are the types of places I like going with my family to explore and learn and at the same time enjoy the quiet nature. Thanks for sharing~

Welcome @crosheille. Thanks so much. I’m happy you liked the photos. It was a lovely afternoon and lots to see and enjoy for families.

You’re welcome ~ 😊

Amazing public gardens, you really did get some wonderful photographs of the flowers, and I love the toy boat in the lake!

Looks like it was a good day to stop for an ice cream, and your #Haturday is splendid.

Thank you very much for sharing your #SublimeSunday with us, I thoroughly enjoyed your trip around the public gardens.
