Fresh Reprieve - Doing It Naturally

in #sustainability5 years ago

One of the most loved and refreshing realities at the @gardenofeden is our outdoor well shower.

The water comes up from 80-100 feet down at about 65 degrees F year-round.  Since we don't use air conditioning in our home in the summer and it can get over 100 degrees for days on end in Texas, our well shower gets utilized multiple times daily by almost everyone!

Many of us also engage the practice of hydrotherapy, taking a nice cold shower in the winter months too.

Our shower has been nestled under a canopy of red and white rose bushes.

This year our shower needed an upgrade as the roses and grapevines became very prolific and began encroaching greatly on the interior shower space.  It became a lesson in consciousness to be still enough not to catch the naked skin or a head of dreads on the increasing thornage!  It was also a wee of a squeeze for our over 6' inhabitants as the ceiling got a few inches lower every year.

So I decided it was time for an upgrade to accommodate our heavy usage during the summer months.

I went out to our bamboo, living fence forest and harvested some sturdy stalks for posts and curtain rods.

I trimmed off the leafy branches to create woven screens on a set of 4 metal trellises, and sunk the thick stalks well into the ground to establish the perimeter and to give the structure form.

I used bamboo poles cut from our forest as well as grape stalks to create a lattice roof to support the roses and grape vines as they spread.

I made space for a dressing room and hung some curtains on bamboo rods, attached with salvaged P-cord instead of buying shower curtain rings.

I used a couple of additional old metal trellises to help stabilize the curtains in the wind, and added a floor to the dressing room made from salvaged, donated open wood flooring.

I hung a couple of open weave wire baskets to house our shower products, leaving drainage so water would not collect in the bottom.  Our shower head will be attached soon where the hose now hangs to give us a full on rain shower experience in nature.

Our cozy dressing room is equipped with a bench, wire shelving, and a towel rack.

I love making upgrades to our sacred space.
This shower is already being enjoyed more than ever by our inhabitants, friends, and AirBnB guests alike.

There's nothing like a dousing of clear, untreated water to refresh oneself in the heat of the day.

Many of us agree that this outdoor shower is one of the greatest blessings of life at the @gardenofeden.
Whether in the heat of summer or the cold of winter, it'll wake you up and push your reset button.

All the materials for this upgrade were already used or harvest directly from nature, so it can be enjoyed for years to come without the expensive purchasing of new materials.  I also get to apply my creative skills to bless our space which benefits everyone.

Great thanks to @quinneaker for his vision of.sustainable living at its finest!
