Permacuture can save the world. That's no exaggeration. Geoff Lawton is a master of permaculture design. Permaculture is a set of design principles centered around whole systems thinking to simulate or directly utilizing the patterns and resilient features observed in natural ecosystems.

You can read more about it at What Is Permaculture? - Permaculture Basics With Geoff Lawton

I recently did a post about keyline water systems called How To Capture And Utilize Every Drop Of Water On Your Farm Using Keyline Water Design where I write about the importance of slowing down the flow of water on a landscape to prevent erosion, hydrate the landscape, and retain nutrients.

It's one of the more important design principles in permaculture design and crucial to ecosystems and farmland sustainability. This is especially true in extreme rains to prevent flooding and the leaching of nutrients from the soil.

Seeing is believing and In this Geoff takes you on a tour of his property after a 100-year flood hits the land so you can see the difference on what happens to land that is managed with permaculture compared to monocrop systems.

The Power of Water

The difference is striking and the principles behind it, while simple, turn a potential problem into a solution. Slowing water down is the key behind a sustainable design and is often overlooked.

The benefits are clear.

  • no erosion
  • topsoil retention and building
  • nutrient accumulation
  • higher water table
  • drought protection
  • more diversity
  • more productivity
  • more water over a longer season

You can solve all the world's problems in a garden

Very cool. Looks like it will capture and retain water. Nice looking mulch.

So many aspect to Permaculture...wish I could get my hands onto that piece of land up the river - mmmm...so much potential, gravity irrigation, 25 acres workable, damn!

The benefits of permaculture is incredible as you outlined them here!

Nice article @luzcypher
