Uncovering The Underlying Algorithm Of Intelligence

in #science7 years ago

Researchers from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University say that they have uncovered a basic algorithm for intelligence. The findings have been printed in the open-access journal Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience, and they suggest that the researchers have uncovered a Theory of Connectivity that encompasses details on the underpinnings of how neurons assemble; how we gain knowledge, draw conclusions, and more.

What the findings suggest is that our brains might have an underlying algorithm that is what enables us to be able to recognize things, ponder thoughts, and arrive at conclusions, etc.

The researchers say that it is a relatively simplistic math formula, a basic underlying principle, that can help to explain the computations that our brains make.

However, this isn’t the first mention of this theory, Dr. Joe Z. Tsien first published an essay about this theory over a year ago, in the Trends in Neuroscience journal. And now the recent study has enabled Tsien and his fellow researchers to establish further understanding about the underlying algorithm.

In their study, the researchers say that the underlying algorithm was seen to be operating in at least 7 different regions of the brain.

The researchers also mentioned that there were exceptions for this underlying mathematical principle which they see at work in different areas of the brain. One of the exceptions they mention is the reward circuits which were associated with dopamine neurons and where they reside, those areas were seen to be more binary than other areas.

Researchers intend to continue investigating this area of study, and about the possibility of whether or not there is a basic mathematical design principle at work in regards to brain development and intelligence in general.

The mind is a complex and still to this point mysterious machine. This work to better understand the mechanistic underpinnings of how intelligence is generated and how the various regions of the brain and interconnected neural pathways function is both fastinating and critical for future development of functional human like AI. It will be interesting to see how future discoveries with relation to this algorythm and field of study in general will help begin to replace some of the mysteries of the mind with facts and data.
