Namu (Dortmund, Germany): A Tasteem Review

Another restaurant feature from Dortmund, when I was there a number of weeks back for a concert there! Again, it was during a period of travelling and getting enough of German food, and really getting that rice craving! Rice is always a thing to settle my stomach after many weeks of eating out...

The Space

Tasteem 1.jpg

The outside of the restaurant is pretty small and tucked away in what might be mistaken for a residential street. Its also beneath a number of residential flats a bit of a walk off the main areas of Dortmund, so it probably isn't a restaurant that you will stumble upon by accident. As you can see in the photo, there were a few of us in the orchestra that were starting to crave some rice and some comforting food after a long day of rehearsal!

The interior is quite welcoming and was a nice warm change to the biting cold of near winter outside! A well stocked bar was quite promising, however, the promise of good Korean food in Europe was also a big lure!

Somehow, not all of the decor was completely comforting.... I'm wondering if these are a Korean thing, or if it is just a strange strange oddity or someone's sense of humour?

The Menu

The menu was a pretty tradional set of Korean choices. Luckily, we had a Korean colleague with us, who was able to recommend some dishes. Also, she was able to talk to the owners in Korean, and so was able to suss out some of the better choices!

Apologies for the slightly less good photos, my phone camera didn't seem to be handling the reflections from the menu so well...

The Food

You can always win hearts with a freebie appetiser! This pumpkin soup was really stunningly good! I'm not sure if it was just a welcome warmth in the belly after the cold walk or if it was the fact that it was a bonus feed, but it really did hit the spot!

A little selection of grilled veggies and meat for an entree with a delicious dipping sauce. Decently presented and very tasty!

If I'm going to a Korean restaurant, it can be pretty much guaranteed that I'm going to order the BiBimBab. It really is the dish that I think will determine the quality of the restaurant. Served up in a hot stone bowl to get the rice nice and crispy on the bottom before stirring everything up, this particular BiBimBab was a great winter meal! Definitely going to come back here again if I'm in the area!

The Experience

Well, I have no complaints about this restaurant, and I will definitely be returning! The staff were friendly and the food preparation was quick.

The atmostphere of the restaurant was very nice, not noisy at all despite the fullness. I think the carpeting and drapery go a long way to creating a nice muted eating area, which I think is quite important. I really don't like restaurants that are just too loud.

The food was top notch, and not too expensive either. Although, this is in West German terms... which is better than Netherlands, but perhaps is worse than in other places in the world!

Until now, I had never found the texture of pumpkin soup to suit my taste.

Anyway, another a great review. Thanks for sharing the experience with @tasteem.

Ah, there is a wide variety of pumpkin soup styles! I'm not a fan of all of them, but there are the creamier ones that I like better! Thanks for the support and curation!

Yeah, those little statue guy things would totally creep me out too! The food looks awesome though, and pumpkin soup like that would totally win me over. Thanks for sharing the yumminess!

Thankfully, they weren't as big as the photo makes them out to be... it was just something unusual that caught my eye!

Bimbimbap is always a good choice at Korean restuarant. Your's look good!! I guess the most important thing is what did you Korean colleague think of the food? Was it authentic enough?

She liked it very much, so I guess it was pretty decent! Bimbimbap is really the go to choice... the little bit of everything, which means that you don't really have to choose!

Howdy sir bengy! What a great place that looks like, the food looks delightful and tasty so I can see that it was a big success! And this was another wonderful review too.

Yes, it was one of the favourite ones that I've reviewed so far... Korean food is one of my preferred meals!

it made me hungry that's for sure! lol.

That bibimbap looks lovely and colourful. I don't know if they make non-meat versions. I've still never tried Korean food!

Yes, it is very easy for them to make a vegetarian option. Most of the toppings are not meat anyway, and so they would just substitute out the meat bit for something else, like steamed or fried tofu.

God that’s a conincidence . I was there last month . It was a nice meal!

Haha... that is what social media is for!

I get a sense that it is pretty small but I like some of the decor details and of course, a free appetizer is always lovely :)

It was a little small, but they were able to fit us in... but we had to wait at the bar for a bit!
