Niemerg's Family Restaurant - A Tasteem Review
Cheap and Fabulous? Totally possible! When I saw this week's theme, I immediately thought of our local favorite, Niemerg's.
No where else have we found such good food at such reasonable prices.
When you come in the main door you are greeted with display case of their baked goods - pies, cookies, brownies - YUM! And you also see their carryout menu and prices, which are also very reasonably priced.
You have a choice of 3 dining areas. There is the bar, the coffe shop, and the main dining area that features their generous salad bar.
We almost always eat in the main dining area to take advantage of the salad bar.
It features a cold section with everything you could want on a salad, plus a delicious array of cold salads, such as macaroni salad, pea salad, broccoli salad, potato salad and more. It has a section of desserts - puddings, jello, stawberry banana sald, fresh fruit, and muffins to name a few.
At one end is a hot bar, featuring 2 kinds of soup, hot cheese sauce for nachos, and fried potato wedges.
Here is their menu. There is a wide variety of selections, plus daily specials. Almost every entree includes the salad bar.
I ordered today the Tuesday special, Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes. First I made a trip to the salad bar for my favorite fixings and a cup of vegetable beef soup.
Our meals arrived with a basket of hot rolls and cinnamon butter to share. It was a very large portion of meatloaf and I ended up taking half of it home with me.
My friend Kate ordered the fried chicken special with a baked potato.
We saved a tiny bit of room for dessert. I would have loved to had a piece of strawberry rubarb pie, but I just couldn't hold it. It is delicious! I settled for a spoonful each of tapico pudding, cherry dream whip, and pineapple walnut salad.
At the end of meal (after great and attentive service from our waitress) I received the bill. Very cheap for all the food, plus a take home box as well.
If you are ever in Effingham, IL I highly recommend that you take the time to find Niemerg's for a great meal at a great price!

Pies! Damn it! I can't get them here on mainland Europe... I miss them so much! ... but it looks like a very nice place to eat!
Definitely one of my favorites! It's about 30 miles from my home, but worth the trip.
I'd like to try all those. Nice review. I learned something g new here.
Thank you, it really is a great place at bargain prices. You have to go at least half hour before lunch time to avoid a wait to get seated.
Omg... Must be popular and I think they are a harmony business - good service, good food and good price. Harmony...
