Thomas the Baker - A Tasteem Review

I have walked past Thomas the Baker several times during my lunch times walks into Skipton, North Yorkshire.

The image it portrays to me is of a copy of Greggs, who are a national baker and listed on the London Stock Exchange.

Being a little late at past 1pm I was not sure if there was going to be anything left to buy. Bakeries in the UK are a very ‘morning’ and ‘lunchtime’ kind of store.

It’s a fine line for them to bake just enough to satisfy the demand. Too little and they sell out too quickly which can be better than too much which ends as waste.

On entering I was once more reminded of the most successful UK bakery. There is a Greggs in Skipton but being a market town, people seem to support the local products. Perhaps that is why there are some many independent bakeries in this town.

As I feared the shelves were quite empty, and I was just after a cake to go with my afternoon coffee!

As well as cakes the store sells all kinds of savoury options such as pies, pasties and sandwiches. It still amazes me that pasties are unavailable in the United States, or were in the Phoenix area where I lived in the 90’s.

The Chelsea Buns looked OK at 95p as well as the Small Bakewell Tart at 60p.

Jammy Gems are just 35p each? It’s not expensive, I will give it that!

The big loaf cakes looked good too, but I can’t eat so much. It might be an idea to bring one back for the team at some point.

Cream cakes are always temping but if you put them in a bag, half the cream sticks to it making a mess, not today.

There was a young bored lad serving but he’s missing from this photograph.

I settled for a Small Bakewell Tart in the end.

There was more on offer than my initial scan revealed. The young bored lad gave me a look as if I was quite insane when he spotted me taking this one.

So how was the Bakewell Tart? Very nice thanks. I will be back to Thomas the Baker for some more treats at a later date.

I'd personally much rather visit the small places than the national chains any day. You need to get yourself to Michigan. If you head north across the bridge into the Upper Peninsula you will find more pasties than you can shake a stick at. There are places along side the road everywhere up there. It is a huge tourist draw. Nice review!

I figured there would be a place you could buy pasties over there, they were conspicuously absent from Mesa, AZ though when I lived there. You couldn't buy pate anywhere either.

It's weird - I'm halfway through my six-week no-added-sugar challenge, and it's almost as if I've lost interest in the stuff! None of this appeals to me, except for the cream scone in the last photo. Usually I would be quite partial to a bakewell tart, but I think I'd find it a bit too sweet and sickly now.
I've just spotted the Chelsea Buns - they look quite nice too.

It's a good place to be... not drawn into these shops. You'll be on the Huel next... LOL!

Ahahahaha! Never.

Yes, I was pleased to see the Chelsea Buns, proper old-fashioned cakes! They look lovely.

... the tank engine, is what it reminds me of!

Anyway, seeing this post reminds me of how much I miss real pies! I would love having them over in Australia, and there are none here of the Continent! When I was visiting UK earlier this year (2018...) I made sure to get my fill of them!

It is a little grey and tank looking, come to think...

No Pies in europe? I cant say I have ever looked while there. Im too busy eating those open sandwiches.

I've never eaten a Bakewell tart so I am quite envious! I'd love to try one!

You don't get these on the other side of the pond? I have to admit I wasn't really taken with the cakes in the US, though fresh cream in AZ wouldn't last very long.

I know of them because of the Great British baking show, but no, they're not readily available here. The area of the country that I live in was settled by Scandinavian, Swiss, and German immigrants so we have been lucky enough to have some good bakeries, but they are getting fewer and fewer all the time and Industrial food is taking over.

Oh no, you don't watch the bake off surely.. and Come Dine with me too?

So what kind of cakes are over there? I wasn't to impressed when I lived there, but the savoury stuff was great.

I love the British TV shows that we get! And never miss the Baking Show. But I can't say as I've ever seen Come Dine with Me. I'll have to check to see if it's available here!

There are regional specialties here, but I suppose because the county is so big and so diverse that I really can't think of anything that is representative of the whole country like your Chelsea Buns are. Blueberry muffins are pretty common, and it seems there is a Dunkin Donuts everywhere you go. And of course some restaurants have better pastries and pies than others do. I like to bake and am fortunate that a couple other family members do, too!

That all looks to delicious :)

Oh I just love bakeries, have not had Bakewell Tart for ages, this looks like a good one, crispy pastry?

Yes, it was nice... I was trying my best not get loads of stuff while in there. The cakes were very inexpensive, which is a perk of living in the north.

You're lucky, but if it was me, I'd forever stop off there to buy those lovely cakes and pastries and would definitely expand ;)

Is there sit down/ table service at this bakery? I am more interested with that sponge cake .... yummmmmoooooo.

LOL, no.. its just a take away bakery!

Congratulations! This post has been chosen as one of the daily Whistle Stops for The STEEM Engine!

Kind of has the feel of a Krispy Kreme type of shop. I would eat it!

I think KK has around 10x the calories, we have them here too.
